Bethany Wu had no expectations for competing in the CIF-Southern Section finals.

Heck, the Diamond Bar High School sophomore did not even realize she was competing in the top event in the CIF-SS until after she arrived at Western Hills Country Club in Chino Hills.

Yet, her 3-under-par 69, one of only two golfers to break par, won the 18-hole tournament.

"I thought it was just the qualifier for the next stage (of CIF-SS competition)," Wu said. "So I didn't really know. But right before I teed off, I found out when coach (Tony McCabe) told me."

Wu won by two strokes on the par-72 course.

"It was a really nice day, but the course was pretty hard," she said.

"That's why I can see why there were all of the high scores."

McCabe said the course had just had work completed on its greens and was set up more like for a professional tournament, not a high school tourney.

A week later, Wu finished tied for seventh in the CIF State-WSCGA Foundation Southern California finals.

She also helped the Brahmas to the CIF-SS Eastern title and a second-place finish only to three-time State champion Torrey Pines in the CIF State-WSCGA team

competition. Wu shot an even-par 72 in the state tournament, tied for second low medalist.

Coach of the Year: TONY McCABE, Diamond Bar

In eight years with the program, McCabe has helped Diamond Bar advance to the CIF-SS finals seven times. The Brahmas had their best season ever in 2012, qualifying for their first state championship tournament and finishing second at the event only to three-time defending champion Torrey Pines.

FIRST TEAM

BREANN FOX, Ontario Christian: Fox, a sophomore, usually plays with the boys team in the spring, as the Knights have no girls team. This fall, however, she shot a 72 at the Northern Individual Regional at River Ridge Golf Club, tying for 12th. At the individual final, she shot an 82, missing qualifying for the WSCGA Tournament by two strokes.

SARAH JEON, Ayala: The Sierra League champion and league MVP shot an 86 in the Southern Individual Regional at Recreation Park Course, missing qualifying for finals by just three strokes as she tied for 57th. The sophomore averaged a 40.5 per nine holes in league play as she led Ayala to a league title. Her season-low score was a 3-over 76.

ISABELLE SHEE, Diamond Bar: The senior shot a 74 at the CIF-WSCGA Southern California championship to help her team to a runner-up finish to three-time state champion Torrey Pines. Shee's finest moment of the season may have been when she birdied three of the last four holes in the state semifinals to help Diamond Bar qualify by one stroke.

ANGELLA THEN, Los Osos: The freshman shot a 76 to tie for 10th at the Northern Individual Regional, advancing to the CIF-SS Regional Final where she shot another 76 to finish 11th and advance to the WSCGA Tournament. At the WSCGA Tournament, she shot a 79 at The Golf Club at Rancho California, including a 38 on the back nine.

KRISTIE YANG, Diamond Bar: The Southern Illinois-bound senior gave the Brahmas the second of the 1-2 punch to win a CIF-SS team title and then finish second in the state. In the CIF-SS individuals, she finished tied for 21st at CIF-SS finals with a score of 79 and shot an 81 in the CIF Southern California State tournament.

SECOND TEAM

Claudia Herbert, Jr., Redlands
Laura Huomanen, Sr., Redlands
Ana Rodriguez, Sr., Cajon
Ruhee Patel, Jr., Ayala
Kaitleen Shee, Fr., Diamond Bar
Marissa Valencia, So., Cajon

MATCH OF THE YEAR: CIF-WSCGA State Championships

Playing in the first state final in school history, Diamond Bar trailed first-place Torrey Pines by just eight strokes with its best golfer among the three left on the course.

The Brahmas cam up short of a state title, but the second-place finish in the CIF-WSCGA State tournament was a monumental accomplishment for the burgeoning program.

Diamond Bar's team total of 420 left it 19 strokes ahead of third-place Mission San Jose and 19 behind three-time state champ Torrey Pines.

Just eight years into its existence, Diamond Bar's program continues to grow stronger. The Brahmas won their first CIF-SS Eastern Division championship this season with a starting six that includes two freshmen and two sophomores.

In hot conditions that only increased the speed of the greens in the state final, sophomore Bethany Wu and senior Kristie Yang led the team with scores of 81 on the par-74 course. Torrey Pines' Shiyang Fan won the individual state title by shooting a round of even par.

Diamond Bar has reached the CIF-SS finals seven times and the state semifinals four times. After its second-place finish in state, there's only one barrier left for Diamond Bar to break.
