SuperBowl Party Time! | Best Family Traditions

It?s the most important football game (and party!) of the year. ?Whether you are attending in New Orleans, grabbing a flight to Vegas or hosting a gathering at your home?.are you ready for some football?

Unknown-7

Both hubby and I have experienced the big day in all forms listed above and this year we are putting together a gathering at the house. ?Some tips I have experienced can hopefully help you with your shindig this Sunday. ?Truly, it?s a game that?s as important for football as it is for commercials, musical acts, wardrobe malfunctions and, of course, truly awe-inspiring game day eats.

For a basic foundation in planning, just remember to surround yourself with good peeps, fab eats, lots to drink and some fun strategic pools.

Good Eats: Whenever I hosted clients in suites for Raider games, our caterer would put together sinfully good menus centered around the opponents hometown. This is more of a tribute to the city if anything, so much that at Superbowl they have a whole event inspired by food. ?This event is called Taste of The NFL and it is the most popular gig to attend during Superbowl week.

taste-of-the-nfl-345I encourage you to plan your Super Bowl eats with inspiration from the cities of both teams competing for the ultimate prize. ?This year you have fabulous San Fran and beautiful Baltimore. ?Both teams come from cities with strong culinary chops from which to draw inspiration. ?Your plan could be to set up two tables, each with dishes from both cities. Let the diners choose their favorite city. Using the results of your belly happy pollsters, you will find a winner ? then lay back and watch the football teams rally.

Sound like a plan? Need some help? ?Here?s some ideas for a culinary game plan from both cities.

ghirardelli-ice-cream-sundae-208x300San Francisco is any food lover?s dream and my dads hometown. ?It?s so diverse, just about anything goes. ?Add to this its proximity to Napa Valley and its large number of superior farmers markets, and San Francisco is easily one of the culinary gems of the West. Therefore, for your party, you might want to recreate the Chinese spareribs, feature artisanal cheeses?or pour Napa wine. I am more the 49er Frankfurter on a San Francisco Sourdough. ?Finish the San Francisco feast with a Ghiradelli chocolate ?SuperBowl Sundae? creation to satisfy everyone?s sweet tooth. However you choose to do it, you can?t go wrong with the bay area cuisine?I left my heart there and for good reason.

Baltimore, on the other hand, doesn?t have as well-known a reputation for being a foodie?s town like San Francisco, but its proximity to the ocean and its supply of crab means that Baltimore knows good seafood. The old standby is crabcake sliders. ?You can also serve a corned beef?sandwich in honor of Baltimore?s Corned Beef Row or offer guests pit beefs, an unusual blend of barbeque beef, slices of sweet onion and horseradish. Blackened Barbeque Burgers work well too!

Pools:?There?s nothing like a friendly little you-pick-the-score game to liven up your party during Super Bowl. This pool, built around a simple visual chart, calls for no skill or knowledge of the game (although the winner may deny that). Here are some samples to get your game on.

Super-Bowl-Squares

As for bets, you?ll be able to find a Super Bowl prop wager on just about anything at the online sportsbooks this week as NFL bettors prepare for the championship matchup. ?The?Superbowl Bashes in Vegas are so crazy, I enjoy all the wagers?you would crack up at the list, ?it is ?a must? to take to a party. ?Click here for a peek of this years wagers.

Kids Celebration: ?Since we will have lil ones enjoying the big day as well, we want to make sure they feel part of the big day. ?This year I will put out a mini kids table full of food and snacks so they can come and go as they please. ?Before the game, kids will help with the pool for the party. I will make sure a kids viewing area is set up,?bean bags a must! One lucky kid will carry in the flag for the national anthem. ?The playroom will be full of goodies and of course the Wii football game of the day ? Niners vs Ravens. ?Next to the food table I will place an arts and crafts table with football-inspired crafts that can be made with things I already have around the house. Some ideas include: making pompoms out of tissue, football players out of construction paper and team pennants out of felt. There are also free printable coloring pages that can be easily found online. ?You can even introduce them to the ?superbowl shuffle- let them come up with their own shuffle performance this year.

Ultimately, it doesn?t matter what you do on game day, as long as you enjoy the game. Who knows, you might just be watching for the commercials. As for food, have fun with it. ?My 4th & Short Stew is always served, which is basically my homeade chili. ?All that matters is you enjoy the game with good food and fab friends. ?Go Niners Quest for 6.

Dell B2360d

Although the Dell B2360d is best thought of as a personal mono laser printer, thanks to having a USB port as its only connector, it offers a level of capability you'd expect in a shared printer for a small office or workgroup. It is, in short, a potentially good choice if you need a printer for unusually heavy-duty use by personal printer standards. That's a little too narrow a niche to make it an Editors' Choice, but if that's the niche you're looking to fill, it promises to be a good fit.

The B2360d is directly competitive, for personal printer use at least, with the Editors' Choice Brother HL-6180DW. It lacks the network support that makes the Brother HL-6180DW far better for sharing, but if you're planning to connect by USB cable, there's no point in paying extra for Ethernet and Wi-Fi. There are other differences too, with the Brother HL-6180DW offering a higher paper capacity (at 550 sheets standard and 1,050 sheets maximum) and the B2360d offering faster speed on our tests, but the differences add up to making the two well-matched overall.

Basics
Although the B2360d doesn't offer as high a paper capacity as the Brother HL-6180DW, its paper handling is suitable for a micro or small office, which makes it more than ample for heavy-duty personal printer use. In addition to a 250-sheet drawer and 50-sheet multi-purpose tray, for a total 300-sheet capacity, it includes a duplexer (for automatic two-sided printing) as standard. If you need more input capacity, you can get an optional 550-sheet tray ($239.99 direct for the standard version or $284.99 for a lockable version) for a maximum total of 850 sheets.

As is typical for a printer with this level of paper handling, the B2360d is relatively big, weighing a hefty 31.1 pounds. However, it measures only 10.3 by 15.7 by 15 inches (HWD), giving it a smaller footprint than many inkjets. Even if you'd rather not have it sitting on your desk, you shouldn't have a problem finding room for it nearby. Setting it up and installing the drivers on a Windows Vista system for my tests was standard fare.

Speed and Output Quality
Dell rates the B2360d at 40 pages per minute (ppm), which is a touch slower than Brother's rating for the HL-6180DW. On our tests, however, the Dell printer was convincingly faster. I timed it on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at an effective 14.8 ppm compared with just 10.7 ppm for the HL-6180W. It's also significantly faster than most other printers in its price range, although the slightly more expensive Canon imageClass LBP6300dn is statistically tied with it, at 14.5 ppm.

Dell B2360d

Output quality for the B2360d is a touch below par overall, but easily good enough for most business needs. Text quality is a step below the low end of the range where most mono lasers fall, but unless you have an unusual need for small fonts you shouldn't have any complaints about it.

Graphics output is absolutely par for a mono laser. Depending on how much of a perfectionist you are, you may or may not consider it good enough for handing out to important clients or customers when you want to convey a sense of professionalism. It's certainly good enough for any internal business use. Photos are a bit below par for a mono laser. Although the photo quality is good enough to print recognizable images from photos on Web pages, I wouldn't recommend using the printer for, say, a client newsletter with photos.

Other Issues
One other plus for the B2360d is a relatively low running cost, at 2.0 cents per page. That's a touch more than the 1.8 cents per page that Brother claims for the HL-6180DW. But with a 0.2 cent difference per page, you'd have to print 20,000 pages to make up the $40 difference in initial cost between the two. For printing anything less than 20,000 pages over the printer's lifetime, you'll still save money with the B2360d.

If your print needs are heavy duty enough to justify getting the Dell B2360d, you should obviously be taking a look at the Brother HL-6180DW as well. And if need to share a printer on a network, need the Brother printer's greater paper capacity, or expect to print enough pages to save money in the long run from the Brother printer's lower running cost, the HL-6180DW may be your preferred choice. If none of those issues applies, however, the Dell B2360d will probably be the better fit, and it certainly doesn't hurt that it offers faster speed and a lower initial cost.

SF Launcher Alpha brings a little piece of Google Now to the homescreen

Android Central

Back at Google I/O last year, our very own Phil Nickinson posed the question -- might Google Now become an Android home screen? Well, a new custom launcher in the Play Store brings a little taste of that to life. SF Launcher Alpha comes from the same developer who brought us the Fixed 4.2 Clock Widget, and integrates the now familiar Google Now images with a card style layout for apps and widgets.

The top image is currently limited to that of San Francisco, London or the generic Google Now image, but will change with the time of day from dawn through day into dusk. Below it sits a widget 'card' and while only one widget is on show at any time, it scrolls so you can add as many as you like. Below that sits your favorite apps, the number displayed is customizable and you choose from scratch -- when you first start the launcher this card is empty.

Scrolling in from the left brings up the settings menu where the theme can be chosen along with numerous different visual setting tweaks, as well as controlling the behavior of tapping on the clock and top image. This can be customized to launch search, the stock clock app, quick settings, among others.

Scrolling in from the right brings up your full app drawer, all the while maintaining the top image and clock. It's a simple idea, and a simple launcher, but is definitely something different to other launchers we've seen. It's still in the early Alpha stages, but is available to download for free from the Google Play Store now. Click on past the break for a quick walkthrough video.

(AP) ? Two years after Egypt's revolution began, the country's schism was on display Friday as the mainly liberal and secular opposition held rallies saying the goals of the pro-democracy uprising have not been met and denouncing Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

With the anniversary, Egypt is definitively in the new phase of its upheaval.

From the revolt that began Jan. 25, 2011 and led to the fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak, the country has moved into a deeply divisive struggle between ruling Islamists, who say a string of election victories the past year gives them to right to reshape Egypt, and their opponents, who say Islamists are moving to take complete power.

Overshadowing their struggle is an economy in free-fall that threatens to fuel public discontent. The vital tourism sector has slumped, investment shriveled, foreign currency reserves have tumbled and prices are on the rise. More pain is likely in the coming months if the government implements unpopular new austerity measures.

"Today the Egyptian people continue their revolution," said Hamdeen Sabahi, a leading opposition leader who finished a close third in presidential elections held in June. "They are saying 'no' to the Brotherhood state ... We want a democratic constitution, social justice, to bring back the rights of the martyrs and guarantees for fair elections."

Tens of thousands massed in Cairo's Tahrir Square, where the 2011 uprising began, and outside Morsi's palace, with more heading to join them from other districts. Banners outside the palace proclaimed, "No to the corrupt Muslim Brotherhood government" and "Two years since the revolution, where is social justice?" Others demonstrated outside the state TV and radio building overlooking the Nile.

Similar if smaller crowds gathered in most of Egypt's main cities, including the Mediterranean cities of Alexandria. The protesters chanted the iconic slogans of the revolt against Mubarak, this time directed against Morsi ? "Erhal! Erhal!" or "leave, leave" and "the people want to topple the regime."

Clashes erupted in multiple places between police firing tear gas and protesters throwing stones ? in side streets around Tahrir, in Alexandria and the city of Suez and in six other cities. Outside the gates of the presidential palace in Cairo, masked protesters tried to push through a police barricade, prompting a barrage of tear gas by security forces.

In two towns in the Nile Delta, Menouf and Shibeen el-Koum, protesters blocked railway lines, disrupting train services to and from Cairo.

At least 119 people were injured in the clashes around the country, the head of the national ambulances services, Mohammed Sultan, told privately owned CBC TV. He did not give details on the nature or location of the injuries.

The immediate goal of the protesters is a show of strength to push Morsi to amend the constitution, which was pushed through by his Islamist allies and rushed through a national referendum. But more broadly, protesters are trying to show the extent of public anger against what they call the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood, the organization Morsi hails from, which they say is taking over the state rather than setting up a broad-based democracy.

Protester Ehab Menyawi said he felt no personal animosity against the Brotherhood but opposed its approach toward Morsi as Egypt's first freely elected leader.

"The Brotherhood thinks that reform was achieved when their man came to power and that in itself is a guarantee for the end of corruption," he said as he marched from the upscale Cairo district of Mohandiseen to Tahrir with some 20,000 others.

Unlike in 2012, when both sides made a show of marking Jan. 25 ? though, granted, not together ? the Brotherhood stayed off the streets for Friday's anniversary. The group said it would honor the occasion with acts of public service, like treating the sick and planting trees. The Brotherhood's ultraconservative allies known as Salafis are also staying off the streets. Their absence may reduce, but not entirely remove, the possibility of violence.

The night before, Morsi gave a televised speech that showed the extent of the estrangement between the two sides. He denounced what he called a "counter-revolution" that is "being led by remnants of ousted president Hosni Mubarak's regime to obstruct everything in the country."

Brotherhood officials have increasingly depicted the opposition as undemocratic, trying to use the streets to overturn an elected leadership.

In another sign of the increasingly bitter tone, new militia-like groups opposed to the Islamists have declared in video messages posted on social networks this week their intention to defend the opposition protesters if attacked. At least 10 people were killed and hundreds injured in December when Morsi's supporters descended upon protesters camped outside his palace, starting clashes that lasted for hours with firebombs, swords, knifes and firearms.

The demands of Friday's protesters vary. Some on the extremist fringe of Egypt's loosely knit opposition want Morsi to step down and the constitution adopted last month rescinded. Others are calling for the document to be amended and early presidential elections held.

"I am asking everyone to go out and demonstrate to show that the revolution must be completed and that the revolution must continue," opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei said in a televised message posted on his party's website.

"There must be a constitution for all Egyptians. A constitution that every one of us sees himself in it," said the Nobel peace Laureate and former head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog.

Egypt's bestselling novelist and democracy campaigner Alaa al-Aswany marched with ElBaradei on Friday to Tahrir. "It is impossible to impose a constitution on Egyptians, a constitution which was sponsored by the Supreme guide of the Muslim Brotherhood, and the revolution today will bring this constitution down," he said.

Morsi, a U.S.-trained engineer, took office in June after a narrow election victory with just under 52 percent of the vote to become the country's first freely elected president.

On the horizon are key elections to choose a new lower house of parliament. The opposition is hoping it can leverage public anger into a substantial bloc in the legislature, but it is still trying to weld together an effective campaign coalition in the face of Islamists' strength at the ballot box.

Last winter, the Brotherhood and Salafis won around 75 percent of the lower house's seats, though the body was later disbanded by court order.

Opponents say Morsi and his Islamist backers have taken that election mandate too far, accusing the secretive, closed Muslim Brotherhood of simply stepping in to fill the shoes of Mubarak's ousted ruling party, only now with a conservative religious bent.

The most glaring example is the constitution itself: Islamists finalized the draft in a rushed, all-night meeting, throwing in amendments to fit their needs, then pushed it through a swift referendum in which only a third of voters participated. The result is a document that could bring a much stricter implementation of Shariah, or Islamic law, than modern Egypt has ever seen.

At the same time, Morsi has kept government policy-making and the choice of appointments almost entirely within the Brotherhood. Members and supporters of the group are being installed bit by bit throughout the state infrastructure ? from governor posts, to chiefs of state TV and newspapers, down to preachers in state-run mosques.

"Egypt is in a bad place, It's been wholly consumed with issues of power, and governance has been left by the wayside. None of this had to be," said Michael W. Hanna, a senior fellow at the New York-based Century Foundation. "It was a conscious decision to eschew reform by consensus. ... For them (the Brotherhood) it's not about reform it's about power."

In Egypt, the danger for the Brotherhood now is that it stands alone as it faces the difficult task of stopping the accelerating slide of the economy. That will require some highly unpopular decisions, including raising taxes and reducing subsidies on fuel and basic foodstuffs. Morsi's government has so far not put forward a cohesive plan, and public anger is growing over mounting prices, unemployment and poverty.

If Morsi and the Brotherhood can't fix the economy, they may try to keep the support of their Islamist base by focusing instead on "the culture war," pushing through a religious agenda of stricter Shariah and more sectarian rhetoric against Egypt's Christian minority, warns Hanna.

"We'll see more polarized politics, and that's a bad omen for actually governing," he said.

Party quits Slovenian government, election looms

LJUBLJANA (Reuters) - A junior partner in Slovenia's ruling coalition quit on Wednesday, stripping the government of its majority in parliament and dealing a blow to the troubled euro zone member's efforts to avoid a bailout.

A second snap election in little over a year looked likely, after Civic List said it had left the ruling coalition over the refusal of conservative prime minister Janez Jansa to resign in a corruption scandal.

"Civic List is quitting the coalition," parliament speaker Gregor Virant, head of Civic List, told reporters after a meeting of the party board.

Jansa can hold on at the helm of a minority government, at least until parliament nominates a new prime minister or calls an early election. He will lose his finance minister, Civic List member Janez Sustersic.

"The minority government can continue for a while but it seems that sooner or later an early election will be held," said Borut Hocevar, an analyst at the Slovenian daily Finance.

"This crisis is certainly pushing Slovenia towards a bailout," he said.

Hit by falling demand for its exports, the Alpine country is battling to stabilize its public finances and reassure markets to avoid becoming the latest member of the euro zone to seek an international bailout.

The government bought some time in October when it managed to issue its first bond in 19 months, averting the need for a bailout for around six months.

Civic List had issued an ultimatum to Jansa to quit or face losing his majority, after an anti-corruption commission issued a report earlier in January saying the prime minister had failed to explain the source of some of his income.

CREDIT DOWNGRADE

Jansa has denied wrongdoing and says he will not resign. But two more parties in the five-party coalition government have also threatened to leave in the coming weeks unless a new prime minister is nominated.

The corruption allegations have fuelled public anger over spending cuts and labor reforms.

On Wednesday, some 100,000 public sector employees held a strike over pay cuts, while around 14,000 employees in the metals and electronics industries also walked off the job, seeking wage increases of up to 7.5 percent.

State employees are angry about a plan to lay off workers and cut wages by some 5 percent this year, adding to a cut of around 3 percent in 2012 as the government tries to narrow its budget shortfall to around 3 percent of national output from 4.2 percent last year.

The public sector strike closed almost all schools, kindergartens and universities in the country of 2 million people. Hospitals were offering limited care with reduced staff.

Protests over the cuts and corruption allegations have caused regular disruption and sometimes turned violent.

Analysts said a snap election would slow vital reforms and dent investor confidence.

"I think the credit ratings will be downgraded whether or not there are early elections as, given the risks and the likely deterioration in the debt/GDP ratios around the bank restructuring program, Slovenia is simply not deserving of a single-A rating anymore," said Standard Bank analyst Timothy Ash.

PFT: Te'o tells Couric he lied about dead girlfriend

bill-callahan-raiders-super-bowlAP

As the allegations of sabotage in Super Bowl XXXVII grew, it was only a matter of time before former Raiders coach Bill Callahan addressed them.? And address them he did, via a late-night statement suggesting that he has gotten himself lawyered up.

By uttering the ?D? word (not the one that ends in ?bag?), Callahan and/or whoever wrote the statement is making it clear to Tim Brown, Jerry Rice, and the persons who represent their legal interests that litigation is at least being contemplated.

But while a defamation lawsuit against one or both former players would become great theater, it would entail many challenges ? and cause significant collateral damage for Callahan, and possibly others.

1.? The statute of limitations against Brown possibly has expired.?

When pressed last night by Erik Kuselias of Pro Football Talk on the assertion of sabotage a decade after the game, Brown said that he has been talking about his suspicions on national television and Dallas radio for years.? Which means that, if Brown is sued, his first defense will be that Callahan waited too long to sue.

In most jurisdictions, the statute of limitations is one year.? It has been more than one year since Brown made his statements in a public setting.

I haven?t research the issue completely (which as I learned early in my legal career is standard lawyer code for ?I don?t really know what I?m talking about?), so it?s entirely possible that, in whichever jurisdiction Callahan would sue, each utterance of the false statement sets the clock back to zero.

2.? The difference between fact and opinion.

If a lawsuit is filed (and if it?s determined to be within the statute of limitations), the biggest challenge will be drawing a line between fact and opinion.? False statements of fact can lead to litigation; uninformed or incorrect opinions based on actual facts are protected.

The factual assertion from Brown is that Callahan drastically changed the offensive game plan two days before Super Bowl XXXVII.? Brown?s opinion is that Callahan was trying to sabotage the Raiders.

It?s a fine line, but Brown arguably has stayed on the right side of it.? Even last night, when he was as candid as he?s ever been about his beliefs, Brown said, ?I?m not necessarily saying he [changed the game plan] for that reason, but it happened.?

Rice may not have been as careful.? ?For some reason ? and I don?t know why ? Bill Callahan did not like me,? Rice said Tuesday on ESPN. ?In a way, maybe because he didn?t like the Raiders, he decided, ?Maybe we should sabotage this a little bit and let Jon Gruden go out and win this one.??

3.? Callahan is a public figure.

For ordinary citizens, any untrue statement of fact can provide the basis for a defamation lawsuit.? For public figures, a higher standard applies.

Callahan will have to show that Brown and Rice knew the allegations were false, or that they acted with reckless disregard to the truth or falsity of their comments.? That necessarily makes any case of defamation against a public figure like Callahan harder to prove.

In this case, it means that Brown and Rice would give detailed testimony on what they experienced that caused them to believe what they believed.? They?ll surely say that something different happened before that game than anything they?d experienced in all their years of playing football, which caused them to believe that Callahan was up to something.

Against a private citizen, that may not matter.? Against a public figure, that explanation could result in the case being tossed before it ever would be presented to a jury.

4.? Callahan would expose himself to significant criticism.

If the case goes forward, many former Raiders players and coaches will be questioned under oath.? And while they will have different perceptions and beliefs about the reasons for the decisions made and not made by Callahan, the questioning will rehash everything that happened in preparation for the game, including whether the game plan was changed and why the audibles and other terminology installed by Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden during his time as the Raiders coach wasn?t.

In other words, and as Kuselias framed the issue last night, Callahan was either corrupt or incompetent.? By proving he wasn?t corrupt, Callahan could end up shining a bright light on the notion that he is incompetent.

5.? Plenty of big names will be involved.

If it goes to trial, this lawsuit ultimately could top, from a media standpoint, every lawsuit ever filed or threatened by the late Al Davis.? The parade in and out of the courtroom would be even more impressive than the? Seinfeld finale, with guys like Rich Gannon and Tyrone Wheatley and Lincoln Kennedy and Bill Romanowski and Rod Woodson and Charles Woodson and Charlie Garner and maybe even Shane Lechler and Sebastian Janikowski making the walk to the witness stand, along with members of the 2002 Raiders coaching staff, including current NFL head coaches Marc Trestman and Jim Harbaugh.

Jon Gruden would likely make an appearance at some point, possibly along with members of the Buccaneers defense (which had guys like Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, and John Lynch), who would be able to shed light on whether or not Gruden seemed to know what was going to happen, and possibly why he knew that.

Current and former NFL head coaches like Rod Marinelli, Raheem Morris, and Mike Tomlin ? all members of the 2002 Buccaneers coaching staff ? also could be involved, along with former Bucs (and current Cowboys) defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin.

At one point during the game, Lynch told Tomlin, ?Mike, every play they?ve run, we ran in practice.? It?s unreal.?

Said Tomlin in response, ?I know.?

The biggest name of all could be the guy who won?t be able to directly participate.? If the game plan was indeed changed by Callahan, we continue to believe the most plausible explanation is that Callahan was ordered to do so by owner Al Davis.? It would be fitting if the outcome of the lawsuit turns on whether a jury believes that Callahan was simply following the marching orders given to him by one of the most litigious owners in sports history.

6.? What should happen next.

Though it would be fascinating to cover the litigation and any trial that would happen, the smart move in the short term would be for Brown and Rice to issue statements explaining clearly that they are merely stating their opinions, based on the facts that they experienced.

And then they should never discuss the situation publicly again.

While on one hand the issuance of statements would suggest that they fear litigation, on the other hand it would be a prudent way of both putting a bow on a story that has quickly taken on a life of its own and managing potential liability risks.

Either way, the ball is not back in Brown?s and Rice?s court.

(AP) ? More than half the Senate on Wednesday urged quick approval of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, ramping up pressure on President Barack Obama to move ahead with the project just days after he promised in his inaugural address to respond vigorously to the threat of climate change.

A letter signed by 53 senators said Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman's approval of a revised route for the puts the long-delayed project squarely in the president's hands.

"We urge you to choose jobs, economic development and American energy security," the letter said, adding that the pipeline "has gone through the most exhaustive environmental scrutiny of any pipeline" in U.S. history. The $7 billion project would carry oil from Canada to refineries along the Texas Gulf Coast.

"There is no reason to deny or further delay this long-studied project," said the letter, which was initiated by Sens. John Hoeven, R-N.D., and Max Baucus, D-Mont., and signed by 44 Republicans and nine Democrats. Another Democrat, Jon Tester of Montana, supports the pipeline but did not sign the letter.

At a news conference Wednesday, senators said the pipeline should be a key part of Obama's "all of the above" energy policy, in which he has expressed support for a range of energy sources from oil and natural gas to wind, solar and coal.

The Obama administration has twice thwarted the 1,700-mile pipeline, which Calgary-based TransCanada first proposed in late 2008. The State Department delayed the project in late 2011 after environmental groups and others raised concerns about a proposed route through environmentally sensitive land in Nebraska.

Under pressure from congressional Republicans to make a decision on the pipeline, President Barack Obama blocked it in January 2012, saying his concerns about the Nebraska route had not been resolved. TransCanada submitted a new application last spring.

The State Department said Tuesday it does not expect to complete a review of the project before the end of March. The State Department has jurisdiction over the pipeline because it crosses a U.S. border.

The renewed focus on the pipeline comes as Obama pledged during his inaugural address to respond to the threat of global warming. Environmental groups and some Democratic lawmakers argue that approving the pipeline would directly contradict that promise.

"If we are going to get serious about climate change, opening the spigot to a pipeline that will export up to 830,000 barrels of the dirtiest oil on the planet to foreign markets stands as a bad idea," said Anthony Swift of the Natural Resources Defense Council.

The pipeline would carry heavy oil derived from tar sands in western Canada. The heat-intensive process uses more energy than traditional oil, producing more heat-trapping gases that contribute to global warming.

Environmental groups have been pressuring Obama to reject the pipeline, citing the oil's high "carbon footprint." They also worry about a possible spill.

At a news conference Wednesday, senators from both parties said the Nebraska decision leaves Obama with no other choice but to approve the pipeline, which would carry up to 800,000 barrels of oil a day from tar sands in western Canada to refineries in Houston and other Texas ports. The pipeline also would travel though Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma.

"No more excuses. It's time to put people to work," Baucus said.

"Back home, we call this a no-brainer," added Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va.

Hoeven, of North Dakota, said the tar sands oil will be produced whether or not the U.S. approves the project. "Our choice is, the oil comes to us or it's going to China," he said.

Nebraska's approval of the pipeline means all six states along the proposed route now support the project, said House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. Majorities in the House and Senate also have endorsed the pipeline. National polls repeatedly show a majority of Americans back the pipeline.

Boehner said he recognizes the political pressure Obama faces from environmental groups and other opponents, but said "with our energy security at stake and many jobs in limbo, he should find a way to say yes."

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Tuesday that the State Department was reviewing the project and he did not want to "get ahead of that process."

Once that review is completed, "we'll obviously address that issue," Carney said.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State nominee John Kerry said he plans to divest holdings in dozens of companies in his family's vast financial portfolio to avoid conflicts of interest if he is confirmed by the Senate.

Kerry, a Massachusetts Democrat, said he would not take part in any decisions that could affect the companies he has holdings in until those investments are sold off. Among the investments are holdings in two Canadian companies, Suncor and Cenovus Energy Inc., both of which have publicly supported the Keystone XL pipeline. Kerry's investments are in family trusts.

Linchpin of skin response to UVA light discovered

Jan. 21, 2013 ? Researchers have strengthened their understanding of how skin cells called melanocytes sense ultraviolet light and act to protect themselves with melanin. In a new study, they report experiments showing that an ion channel well-known elsewhere in the body for its chemical sensitivity, plays a central role in this process.

Last year, a team of researchers at Brown University discovered that certain skin cells use a light-sensitive receptor found outside of the eye to sense ultraviolet light and quickly begin pumping out melanin to protect against DNA damage. In a new study, lab members identify a key player in that biomolecular chain of events that could someday become a pharmacological target for improving this protective response.

The new discovery, published the week of Jan. 21 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is that human melaoncyte skin cells rely on an ion channel called TRPA1 to allow a flood of calcium ions into the cells when they are exposed to UVA light. The resulting abundance of calcium ions signals the cell to begin making melanin, the pigment responsible for the tanning response in people.

The discovery "is exciting because it confirms this phototransduction pathway is similar to those found in the eye."Several experiments described in the paper show that TRPA1, which is known from a number of other appearances elsewhere in the body, is an essential step in the skin's response to UVA light, said senior author Elena Oancea, assistant professor of medical science in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology, Physiology, and Biotechnology at Brown.

As a matter of basic science, the finding strengthens the evidence of a striking parallel between the skin's response to UVA light and the way the eye detects light.

"Its exciting because it confirms this phototransduction pathway is similar to those found in the eye. It consists of a light-sensitive receptor, molecular signaling cascade, and an ion channel," Oancea said. "The involvement of an ion channel makes this pathway a lot more like other phototransduction pathways."

In other parts of the body, TRPA1 has been shown to help detect pungent but benign chemicals, such as those in intensely flavorful foods. Oancea and lead author Nicholas Bellono said the chemical sensitivity of TRPA1 offers the intriguing possibility that it could become a target for experiments to boost melanin production.

"TRPA1 ion channels are involved in the detection of pungent chemicals such as cinnamaldehyde, wasabi, and mustard oil, and we've now found it's important for this melanin response," Bellono said. "There is a possibility that we can pharmacologically alter pigmentation through regulation of this ion channel."

Oancea and Bellono emphasized, however, that people who go out in the sun should always take widely recommended precautions to protect their skin, such as using high-SPF commercial sunscreens or wearing protective hats and clothing.

Finding the channel

From the prior research in Oancea's lab, Bellono knew he was looking for some kind of molecular pathway that would start with a light sensitive receptor and trigger an elevated level of calcium ions in the melanocytes.

It seemed possible that a TRP ion channel would be involved because TRPs are involved in phototransduction elsewhere in the body that lead to an increase in intracellular calcium. There are, however, many types of TRP channels, and the molecular identity of the UVA-activated channel in melanocytes was not apparent. Oancea confessed that she even suspected another as the culprit. But many experiments later, the team hit on TRPA1 and amassed considerable evidence to confirm its vital role.

In one experiment, for example, they treated melanocytes with "antagonist" chemicals known to block TRPA1 activity. They then exposed the cells to UVA light and measured the resulting electrical response. The cells blocked with the antagonists had 80 to 90 percent reduction in current compared to the unhindered cells.

They used a similar technique of specifically blocking TRPA1 activity to show that the ion channel contributes greatly to the presence of calcium ions after UVA exposure compared to unhindered melanocyte cells. They also found melanocytes produce little or no melanin following exposure to UVA when TRPA1 is blocked.

They did not, however, do experiments to see whether adding TRPA1 stimulating substances could increase melanin production.

In addition to Bellono and Oancea, other authors on the paper are Laura Kammel and Anita Zimmerman.

The National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health (grant T32-GM077995), and Brown University funded the research.

HOUSTON (AP) ? A shooting on a Texas community college campus wounded three people Tuesday and sent students fleeing for safety as officials placed the campus on lockdown, officials said.

Harris County Sheriff's Maj. Armando Tello said authorities had detained a person of interest. He did not provide any details about the people who were wounded, such as whether they were students or included the person who was arrested.

Authorities thought there could be a second shooter, according to a law enforcement official in Washington who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the ongoing case.

The school's official Twitter feed said the shooting was between two people and that the situation was under control. It had issued an alert on its website earlier, telling students and faculty to take immediate shelter or avoid the campus.

Aerial footage from local television stations showed police cars and ambulances parked on the Lone Star College System campus about 20 miles north of downtown Houston. Emergency personnel could be seen tending to people on stretchers, while others ran from a building led by officers.

Mark Smith, spokesman for the Harris County Emergency Corps, said four people were taken to two hospitals. He said at least two had gunshot wounds, and one appeared to have had a heart attack related to the shooting. He said one was in critical condition.

Relatives identified Jody Neal, 24, as one of the people who was shot and said he was taken to Harris Health Ben Taub Hospital Emergency Center with gunshots in his arm, stomach and leg.

"He was sitting in the study room. There (were) three people on the computer and a guy walked up the stairs and opened fire on him," Stacy Neal, Jody's sister, told KPRC-TV. "They said it was just one guy that came in with a gun."

Other students said they were studying or waiting for classes to start when they heard gunfire about 12:30 p.m.

"I didn't think they were shots," said Daniel Flores, 19. "It sounded like someone was kicking a door."

He was in a second-floor tutoring lab with about 60 people. Once they realized the sound was gunfire, they fled to the nearby student services center, where authorities kept them for about 30 minutes before letting them go, Flores said.

Cody Harris, 20, said he was in a classroom with about six or seven other students waiting for a psychology class to start when he heard eight shots. He and other students looked at each other, said "I guess we should get out of here," and fled.

"I was just worried about getting out," Harris said. "I called my grandmother and asked her to pick me up."

The shooting comes one month after a gunman attacked an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., killing 20 children and heightening security concerns at campuses across the country. In Texas, several school districts have either implemented or are considering a plan to allow faculty to carry guns on campus. The Texas Legislature this year may also debate a bill that would allow guns on college campuses.

The Lone Star College System has an enrollment of 90,000 students and six college campuses, according to its website. Its programs in Harris County include training to be a paramedic.

Mark Zaragosa said he had just come out of an EMT class when he saw two people who were injured and stopped to help them. Officers had not yet arrived, he said.

"The two people that I took care of had just minor injuries," Zaragosa told KHOU. "One gentleman had a gunshot to the knee and the (other) actually had an entry wound to the lower buttocks area."

Keisha Cohn, 27, who also is studying to be a paramedic, said she was inside a building about 50 feet away from where the shots were fired. She heard "no less than five" shots and started running.

She fled to the learning center, which houses computers and study areas. Eventually, a deputy showed up and escorted people out, she said. She left her car on the campus, which was evacuated and closed for the rest of the day.

Growing A Garden For The Whole Family To Enjoy | My DIY Home ...

Why not learn something new about becoming a better gardener? Don?t waste money on equipment, plants or seeds without first figuring out exactly what you need.

Instead of leaving clumps of irises intact, divide them so that your flowers can grow in a more healthy manner. Splitting up overgrown groups of irises will allow you to easily increase the number of irises in your garden. When the foliage has died off, it is time to harvest the iris bulbs. As soon as you pick up the bulb, it?ll split into pieces. That?s okay ? in fact, it?s desirable. You can replant the bulb pieces and next year you?ll have a healthy bed of new irises. Divide up the rhizomes with a knife. Cut new outside pieces and dispose of the center. Each piece must have a minimum of one strong offshoot. Replant the new shoots right away.

Conserve water by watering your garden with rain water. Collect the rainwater in a container or barrel, which makes for a great natural resource, not only that it saves you money on water bills. Keep this in mind as a way to add a little more to your budget for other things and to make sure your garden is as natural as possible.

Do you enjoy fresh mint, but don?t like how they engulf your garden in their growth? You can control the growth of the mint leaves by growing them in a large container rather than in your garden. You can then plant the container down in the ground if you like, but the walls of the container will hold the roots captive, and keep the plant from taking over your garden!

Maximize use of the colors of autumn. Deciduous vines, trees and shrubs wait until autumn to fully bloom. This will renew your garden with a bright array of fall colors. This change happens because the plants stop producing chlorophyll, and pigments that were previously masked by green begin to show. Make sure your plants get as much sun as possible so they can give more vivid colors. Some great shrubs to use are boston ivy, barberry, chestnut, and maple.

Architect your veggie garden before breaking ground. Make a detailed list of everything that you would like to plant, and include a clear drawing of your available growing space. You can then use that drawing to plan out where each item should be planted. Don?t forget to factor in plant width and height and what each plant requires as far as sunlight and moisture.

If you are growing a vegetable garden, you may find that pests can be difficult to control. You want to avoid spraying harsh chemicals since the vegetables are meant for consumption. So to help you control the pests that may invade your garden, you will want to stay vigilant. If you find any unwanted pests, try removing them by hand.

CO2 is essential for growth. Typically, the higher the levels of carbon dioxide present in a plant?s environment, the better it will grow. A greenhouse will provide plants with an environment rich in carbon dioxide. CO2 levels are best kept high, in order to provide optimal growing conditions for your plants.

If you want to draw advantageous insects to your garden, plant some heather. Heather is very attractive to bees, and when bees first emerge in the spring, it is an early source of nectar. Heather beds are also attractive to bugs such as spiders and ground beetles that will kill pests. With this in mind make sure you wear some gloves when you are working with the heather.

Make a plan for your garden. Doing this makes it easier to keep track of where you planted what when you first start to see sprouts. You might end up losing small plants in a large area, because you did not water them.

Surround your vegetable plants with organic mulch, a few inches worth. The organic mulch will keep moisture in the soil for a little longer. This also helps reduce the appearance of weeds. This will save you having to constantly pull weeds.

Use proper soil for the best results. You should choose your soil depending on the plants that you are going to plant. You can simply use one type of soil to make an artificial area.

Creating a beautiful garden takes a little research, the right equipment, and enough time to enjoy tending it. Once you look upon your amazing garden, you?ll realize that the work has paid off!

NEW YORK (AP) ? Sniffling, groggy and afraid she had caught the flu, Diana Zavala dragged herself in to work anyway for a day she felt she couldn't afford to miss.

A school speech therapist who works as an independent contractor, she doesn't have paid sick days. So the mother of two reported to work and hoped for the best ? and was aching, shivering and coughing by the end of the day. She stayed home the next day, then loaded up on medicine and returned to work.

"It's a balancing act" between physical health and financial well-being, she said.

An unusually early and vigorous flu season is drawing attention to a cause that has scored victories but also hit roadblocks in recent years: mandatory paid sick leave for a third of civilian workers ? more than 40 million people ? who don't have it.

Supporters and opponents are particularly watching New York City, where lawmakers are weighing a sick leave proposal amid a competitive mayoral race.

Pointing to a flu outbreak that the governor has called a public health emergency, dozens of doctors, nurses, lawmakers and activists ? some in surgical masks ? rallied Friday on the City Hall steps to call for passage of the measure, which has awaited a City Council vote for nearly three years. Two likely mayoral contenders have also pressed the point.

The flu spike is making people more aware of the argument for sick pay, said Ellen Bravo, executive director of Family Values at Work, which promotes paid sick time initiatives around the country. "There's people who say, 'OK, I get it ? you don't want your server coughing on your food,'" she said.

Advocates have cast paid sick time as both a workforce issue akin to parental leave and "living wage" laws, and a public health priority.

But to some business owners, paid sick leave is an impractical and unfair burden for small operations. Critics also say the timing is bad, given the choppy economy and the hardships inflicted by Superstorm Sandy.

Michael Sinesky, an owner of seven bars and restaurants around the city, was against the sick time proposal before Sandy. And after the storm shut down four of his restaurants for days or weeks, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars that his insurers have yet to pay, "we're in survival mode."

"We're at the point, right now, where we cannot afford additional social initiatives," said Sinesky, whose roughly 500 employees switch shifts if they can't work, an arrangement that some restaurateurs say benefits workers because paid sick time wouldn't include tips.

Employees without sick days are more likely to go to work with a contagious illness, send an ill child to school or day care and use hospital emergency rooms for care, according to a 2010 survey by the University of Chicago's National Opinion Research Center. A 2011 study in the American Journal of Public Health estimated that a lack of sick time helped spread 5 million cases of flu-like illness during the 2009 swine flu outbreak.

To be sure, many employees entitled to sick time go to work ill anyway, out of dedication or at least a desire to project it. But the work-through-it ethic is shifting somewhat amid growing awareness about spreading sickness.

"Right now, where companies' incentives lie is butting right up against this concern over people coming into the workplace, infecting others and bringing productivity of a whole company down," said John A. Challenger, CEO of employer consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Paid sick day requirements are often popular in polls, but only four places have them: San Francisco, Seattle, Washington, D.C., and the state of Connecticut. The specific provisions vary.

Milwaukee voters approved a sick time requirement in 2008, but the state Legislature passed a law blocking it. Philadelphia's mayor vetoed a sick leave measure in 2011; lawmakers have since instituted a sick time requirement for businesses with city contracts. Voters rejected a paid sick day measure in Denver in 2011.

In New York, City Councilwoman Gale Brewer's proposal would require up to five paid sick days a year at businesses with at least five employees. It wouldn't include independent contractors, such as Zavala, who supports the idea nonetheless.

The idea boasts such supporters as feminist Gloria Steinem and "Sex and the City" actress Cynthia Nixon, as well as a majority of City Council members and a coalition of unions, women's groups and public health advocates. But it also faces influential opponents, including business groups, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who has virtually complete control over what matters come to a vote.

Quinn, who is expected to run for mayor, said she considers paid sick leave a worthy goal but doesn't think it would be wise to implement it in a sluggish economy. Two of her likely opponents, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and Comptroller John Liu, have reiterated calls for paid sick leave in light of the flu season.

While the debate plays out, Emilio Palaguachi is recovering from the flu and looking for a job. The father of four was abruptly fired without explanation earlier this month from his job at a deli after taking a day off to go to a doctor, he said. His former employer couldn't be reached by telephone.

"I needed work," Palaguachi said after Friday's City Hall rally, but "I needed to see the doctor because I'm sick."
