Delhi Gang-Rape Victim Dies; India Awash In Grief
On Saturday morning, a 23-year-old Delhi woman died in a Singapore hospital (where she had been airlifted to on Thursday) from grave injuries suffered during a brutal hour-long sexual assault by at least four men on a private bus in Delhi.
The young woman?s ordeal has seemingly inspired a massive amount of self-reflection in India with respect to how women and girls are treated.
Now, the protesters who have vociferously condemned the police and courts of law for their inaction have turned to mourning the passing of the girl most of them never knew.
Press Trust of India reported that massive memorials for the victim were held in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, Bangalore and other parts of the vast country. Many were dressed in black and had their mouths covered with tape in a silent protest.
These demonstrations were largely peaceful, unlike last week?s orgies of rage and anguish, marked by violent clashes with teargas-firing police.
Still, this tragic incident ? one of untold hundreds of thousands of sexual assaults that occur in India every year ? may lead to political and social upheavals.
Shabana Azmi, an actress turned activist, vowed: ?We cannot let the anger pass. It will be a greater betrayal. We have to do some soul searching.?
Indeed, six men arrested in connection with the gang-rape have had their criminal charges upgraded to murder, while many women?s rights activists are demanding the death penalty in such cases,
India's Home Affairs minister, Ratanjit Pratap Narain Singh promised swift action against the rapists.
"I can only assure the family [of the victim] that the government will take whatever steps are needed to ensure that her killers get the harshest punishment in the quickest of time," he said.
"The government will work overtime to try and bring about laws and steps that will ensure that no other person, no other citizen of this country, has to go through or undergo the same kind of trauma."
Delhi students plan to hold a vigil at the location in south Delhi where the girl was attacked to call for tougher punishment for sex offenders.
But some parts of the capital are in a security lockdown to prevent the resurgence of violence.
?The government is not even allowing mourning of the death. This is insensitivity. There is complete lock down. You have the metro stations shut. You have a road completely blocked. This is undemocratic,? a protester complained to PTI.
BBC reported that in response to promises from lawmakers that the government will get tough on rapists, one Delhi protester held up a sign which read: "We don't want your condolences! We don't want your fake sentiments! We demand immediate action to strengthen the laws against sexual violence."
Meanwhile, the victim will be flown back to India for a private funeral.

Green Blog: A Discovery, Marooned in Libya's Revolution
As Adam Nagourney reports in The Times, Death Valley is experiencing a burst of civic pride over reclaiming a world temperature record: a 134-degree reading registered on July 10, 1913, at Greenland Ranch in California.
The World Meteorological Organization announced in September that it was throwing out what had previously been thought to be the global record: a reading of 136.4 degrees recorded in the Libyan settlement of Al Aziziya on Sept. 13, 1922. The revised record made headlines around the world.
Yet the back story is even more interesting. Khalid el-Fadli, a Libyan member of the meteorological team that investigated the record, found the original 1922 temperature reading in a logbook at the Libyan National Meteorological Center, where he works, on Feb. 15, 2011, when a revolution had just broken out in the capital.
Working from the logbook, the international team would eventually discover that the reading was taken by an untrained observer with an instrument that was outmoded even for its time. What is more, the temperature did not jibe with other temperatures measured in the area on Sept. 13, 1922, and it differed markedly from readings taken later at Azizia.
Yet it took it took the team six months to pursue those findings, given that Mr. Fadli got sucked into a war immediately after reporting the discovery of the notebook. ?During the revolution, it was very dangerous to call anyone outside,? he said in a telephone interview from Tripoli, the Libyan capital. And ?international calls were shut down by the government? in any case, he said.
Mr. Fadli recalled: ?From March until July, I would go to my office ? not regularly, not every day. Because there was no fuel, our life was very hard.?

He recalls reading the e-mails flooding in from international colleagues, at first curious in tone and then deeply concerned as weeks passed by. For a full six months he resisted the urge to reply lest he be accused of corresponding with the enemy.
?
Given the level of government monitoring, any knowledge that he was communicating with an international committee ?would have been a death sentence for him,? said Chris Burt, a member of the international meteorological team.
?
Then came a television pronouncement by Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, Libya?s longtime dictator, that NATO was using climate data relayed from Libyan scientists to plot its aerial attacks on Libyan government forces. The scientists on the meteorological team assumed the worst. ?My fear was that they had found out that el-Fadli was part of this committee,? Mr. Burt said.

But Mr. Fadli remained below the radar, and when the violence tapered off that August, he resumed communications with his distant colleagues, and together,?they were able to move on with their work.

He continues to work at the Libyan National Meteorological Center. ?It?s not completely normal yet,? Mr. Fadli said of his country?s situation. But a semblance of calm has returned, he added.

South West China, Myanmar and Northern Vietnam contain one of the oldest exposed outcrops of limestone in the world. Within this area are thousands of caves and gorges. It is only recently that botanists have sought to explore the caves for plants. This exploration is yielding many new species new to science, that are known only from these habitats. The current study was published in the open access journal PhytoKeys.
Kew botanist and nettle expert Alex Monro says, "When my Chinese colleague Wei Yi-Gang from the Guangxi Institute of Botany first mentioned cave-dwelling plants to me, I thought that he was mis-translating a Chinese word into English. When we stepped into our first cave, Yangzi cave, I was spell-bound. It had an eerie moonscape look to it and all I could see were clumps of plants in the nettle family growing in very dark condition".
The plants do not grow in complete darkness but do grow in extremely low light levels, deep within the entrance caverns of the caves (sometimes, in as little as 0.04% full sunlight). The British and Chinese authors have been collecting plants from the Nettle family in this limestone landscape for several years and have just published a paper describing three new species, one from a cave and another two from deep gorges.
The cave-dwelling nettle species in question, was found growing in two caves in the Guangxi province of China. Of the species discovered in gorges, one is known from an unusual and striking rock mineral formation called petaloid travertine. Petaloid travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs that over time forms large petals of rock, in this case clinging to the vertical walls of a gorge.
These plants are members of a genus of Nettles known as Pilea, that is believed to have over 700 species Worldwide, up to one third of which may remain undescribed.

ZTE Grand S should be just 6.9mm thick, wield a 13MP camera
ZTE has been more than willing to spill the beans about the Grand S ahead of CES, and it's not stopping with the mention that the phone exists. The Chinese phone maker has confirmed that its 5-inch smartphone measures just 6.9mm (0.27in) thick -- that's a sight slimmer than the Droid DNA and Nubia Z5. There's also mention of a 13-megapixel camera that explains a slightly visible rear hump. While we don't yet have confirmation of the rumored quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro and 2GB of RAM, ZTE has left clues that the flagship could undercut typical pricing with a ¥2,799 ($449) off-contract cost in China. We may only know the full details in Las Vegas, but there's every indication that the Grand S hardware could justify a boast or two.

Mark Cuban's Advice On Success - Business Insider
Mark Cuban has taken to Reddit to answer questions on everything from the NBA, to his famous?confrontation with ESPN talking head Skip Bayless, to his unconventional ideas on tax policy.?
He also gave advice on what made him famous before he became the high profile owner of the Dallas Mavericks and?his incredible success as an entrepreneur. ?
When asked what people should know before starting a business, he responded:?
"It's not about the idea, it's about how prepared you are. Everyone has ideas, most don't do the work required to get the job done. The 2nd thing you need to know is that sales are the most important aspect of a small business. No sales, no company."
Cuban's advice is all about being pragmatic. People toss around terms like "disruption" and "innovation," then go and make products that nobody wants to buy, or don't actually do the work required to make their idea work as a business.
When it comes to his personal success, he takes a similar tack. When asked about passion versus hard work and how he motivated himself he wrote:
"I daydreamed for motivation. I didn't lie to myself and talk about my passions and how if I was passionate enough about something i could be successful at it.
I was lucky. I grew up knowing that hard work and smart work?[has]?a greater impact on results than being passionate about something."?
So work hard, and be prepared.?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senator bickered Sunday over who's to blame for lurching the country toward a year-end "fiscal cliff," bemoaning the lack of a deal days before the deadline but bridging no differences in the debate.
With the collapse Thursday of House Speaker John Boehner's plan to allow tax rates to rise on million-dollar-plus incomes, Sen. Joe Lieberman said "it's the first time that I feel it's more likely we'll go over the cliff than not," meaning that higher taxes for most Americans and painful federal agency budget cuts would be in line to go ahead.
"If we allow that to happen it will be the most colossal consequential act of congressional irresponsibility in a long time, maybe ever in American history because of the impact it'll have on almost every American," said Lieberman, a Connecticut independent.
Wyoming Sen. Jon Barrasso, a member of the GOP leadership, predicted that the new year would come without an agreement, and he faulted the White House.
"I believe the president is eager to go over the cliff for political purposes. He senses a victory at the bottom of the cliff," he said.
Democratic Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota, chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, was incredulous at Barrasso's assertion that 'there is only one person that can provide the leadership" on such a matter vital to the nation's interests.
"There are 535 of us that can provide leadership. There are 435 in the House, 100 in the Senate and there is the president, all of us have a responsibility here," he said. "And, you know what is happening? What is happening is the same old tired blame game. He said/she said. I think the American people are tired of it. What they want to hear is what is the solution?"
No solution seemed any nearer, with Obama and Congress on a short holiday break. Congress is expected to be back at work Thursday and Obama in the White House after a few days in Hawaii.
"It is time to get back to the table," said Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., "And I hope if anyone sees these representatives from the House in line shopping or getting their Christmas turkey, they wish them a merry Christmas, they're civil, and then say go back to the table, not your own table, the table in Washington."
Obama already has scaled back his ambitions for a sweeping budget bargain. Before leaving the capital on Friday, he called for a limited measure that extend George W. Bush-era tax cuts for most people and stave off federal spending cuts. The president also urged Congress to extend jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed that would otherwise be cut off for 2 million people at the end of the year.
"The truth of the matter is, if we do fall off the cliff after the president is inaugurated, he'll come back, propose just what he proposed ... in leaving Washington and we'll end up adopting it, but why should we put the markets in such turmoil and the people misunderstanding or lack of confidence," said Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga. "Why not go ahead and act now?
Obama's announcement late Friday suggested that a smaller deal may rest in the Senate, given the failure of Boehner's option in the House.
"The ball is now clearly with the Senate," said Lieberman.
He said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and GOP leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky "have the ability to put this together again and pass something. It won't be a big, grand bargain to take care of the total debt, but they can do some things that will avoid the worst consequences going over the fiscal cliff."
It was only a week ago when news emerged that Obama and Boehner had significantly narrowed their differences. Both were offering a cut in taxes for most Americans, an increase for a relative few and cuts of roughly $1 trillion in spending over a year. Also included was a scaling back of future cost-of-living increases for Social Security recipients ? a concession on the president's part as much as agreeing to higher tax rates was for the speaker.
Lieberman was on CNN's "State of the Union," while Barrasso and Conrad appeared on "Fox News Sunday." Klobuchar and Isakson were on "Fox News Sunday."

Obama tries to rescue fiscal talks for post-Christmas deal
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House on Friday tried to rescue stalled talks on a fiscal crisis after a Republican plan imploded in Congress, but there was little headway as lawmakers and President Barack Obama abandoned Washington for Christmas.
In remarks before flying to Hawaii for a break, Obama suggested reaching a short-term deal on taxes and extending unemployment insurance to avoid the worst effects of the "fiscal cliff" on ordinary Americans at the start of the New Year.
"We've only got 10 days to do it. So I hope that every member of Congress is thinking about that. Nobody can get 100 percent of what they want," said Obama.
Obama said he wanted to sign legislation extending Bush-era tax cuts for 98 percent of Americans in the coming days.
The Democrat appeared to be offering bickering lawmakers a way to fix the most pressing challenge - tax cuts that expire soon - while leaving thorny topics such as automatic spending cuts or extending the debt ceiling for later.
Obama called on lawmakers to use the holiday break to cool off frayed nerves, "drink some eggnog, have some Christmas cookies, sing some Christmas carols," and come back next week ready to make a deal.
Negotiations were thrown into disarray on Thursday when House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner failed to convince his fellow Republicans to accept tax cuts for even the wealthiest of Americans as part of a possible agreement with Obama.
"How we get there, God only knows," Boehner told reporters on Friday when asked about a possible comprehensive fiscal cliff solution.
If there is no agreement, taxes would go up on all Americans and hundreds of billions of dollars in automatic government spending cuts would kick in next month - actions that could plunge the U.S. economy back into recession.
Obama spoke to Boehner on Friday and held a face-to-face White House meeting with the top Democrat in Congress, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
Before his defeat in Congress, Boehner had extracted a compromise from Obama to raise taxes on Americans making more than $400,000 a year, instead of the president's preference of those with income of $250,000 a year.
But with talks stalled on the level of spending cuts to which Obama would agree, Boehner attempted a backup plan to raise taxes only on those making more than $1 million a year - amounting to just 0.18 percent of Americans.
BAD DEFEAT FOR BOEHNER
Boehner's reverse in the House was worse than first thought. A key Republican lawmaker said Boehner scrapped the vote when he realized that between 40 and 50 of the 241 Republicans in the House would not back him.
Obama and his fellow Democrats in Congress are insisting that the wealthiest Americans pay more in taxes in order to help reduce federal budget deficits and avoid deep spending cuts. Republicans control the House and Democrats control the Senate.
Stocks dropped sharply early Friday on fears that the United States could go fall back into recession if politicians do not prevent it.
But major indexes lost less than 1 percent, suggesting investors still held out hope that an agreement will be brokered in Washington.
"I think if you get into mid-January and (the talks) keep going like this, you get worried, but I don't think we're going to get there," said Mark Lehmann, president of JMP Securities, in San Francisco.
Boehner, joined by his No. 2, Eric Cantor, at a Capitol Hill news conference, said the ultimate fault rests with Obama for refusing to agree to more spending reductions that would bring down America's $1 trillion annual deficit and rising $16 trillion debt.
"What the president has proposed so far simply won't do anything to solve our spending problem. He wants more spending and more tax hikes that will hurt our economy," Boehner said.
Democrats responded with incredulity.
House members, heading to their home states for the holidays, were instructed to be available on 48 hours notice if necessary.
"They went from 'Plan B' to 'plan see-you-later,'" Obama adviser David Axelrod said on MSNBC on Friday morning.
The crumbling of Boehner's plan highlights his struggle to lead some House Republicans who flatly reject any deal that would increase taxes on anyone.
Republican Representative Tim Huelskamp criticized Boehner's handling of the negotiations, saying the speaker had "caved" to Obama opening the door to tax hikes. Huelskamp, a dissident first-term congressman from Kansas, said he was not willing to compromise on taxes even if they are coupled with cuts to government spending sought by conservatives.
Fiscal conservatives "are so frustrated that the leader in the House right now, the speaker, has been talking about tax increases. That's all he's been talking about," Huelskamp said on MSNBC on Friday morning.

Amazon.com completed the acquisition of their corporate campus yesterday. The $1.154 billion transaction between Paul Allen?s Vulcan Real Estate is composed of 11 buildings with over 1.8 million square feet of space. The price equates to $644 per square foot.

Social media is a platform on par or even bigger than things like email or telephones. The effect for brands being present and useful on the social web is increasingly influencing direct sales but also acts as an assist.
People buy because they like you. Brands can get to know their customers and become ?likeable? by being useful through social networks and media sharing sites. ?The notion of customer journey is really important here because marketers that understand how people discover, consume and engage with content will be able to create and optimize performance of social, search or whatever tactics are in the mix. The business value of social participation does rely on the mechanics of measurement, but more importantly, it relies on the intent of the brand. Myth 3:?My B2B Customers Are Not on the Social Web
Over the past 5+ years I?ve heard more than a few B2B company marketers say that their customers are, ?Not on Facebook, Not on Twitter, Not watching YouTube, Not on Pinterest? and so on. ?They say sales people never mention that clients decided to look up enterprise CRM software with their aunts, uncles and cousins on Facebook, so clearly, customers aren?t there. ?Marketing says competitors don?t have a Facebook page and rarely post to a company blog, so clearly prospects are not there. The CEO, and CMO are not active on the social web and they represent the ideal prospect for this B2B company. Again, a vote of no confidence for B2B buyers sourcing resources via the social web.
Myth Busted: ??B?s are people too. The B2B buyer?experiences?a much longer sales cycle of information discovery, consumption and evaluation. Sourcing new products and servies relies on more than search and extends to business connections on social networks like LinkedIn. IBM has a classic example of ?Listening for Leads? on forums, Twitter and public social networks for buying signals then reaching out to help. That social sales prospecting effort generated millions of new revenue.
There are many other sources to support the influence of social media on B2B sales and marketing effectiveness. LinkedIn shared an infographic outlining the influence of social media on IT decisions for B2B. 85% of IT decision makers use social media for business and 3 out of 5 said social media influenced their purchasing decision. A recent Demand Gen Report B2B Buyer Survey reports that 50% of B2B buyers say social media plays a major role in purchasing decisions and 53% use social media to follow discussion on the vendors they are considering. According to SiriusDecisions,?67% of the buyer?s journey is now done digitally. Much of that journey is fueled with content that is discovered, consumed and shared on the social web.
B2B influence is not limited to email, conferences and white papers. The social web is ubiquitous for how buyers research credible sources of information and vendors. The only question is, when they do that research, will they be informed and guided through the sales process by your company?s social media content or your competitors?

Luckily, a community fostered fix seems pretty simple too -- XDA user RyanZA has already created a patch to modify write permissions on affected devices -- though Galaxy S III users are reporting that the fix cripples the phone's camera app. So far, Alephzain has confirmed that the Galaxy S II, III, Note II and the Meizu MX are at risk, but notes that the exploit might work on any device running a Exynos 4210 or 4412 processor. Samsung has not yet made a comment about the vulnerability, but forum members say that the issue has been reported. As for the exploit's lasting implications? Simond's solution is wrapped up in a simple APK, and requires no root, no flashing and no special know-how. It can be enabled or disabled manually, too -- allowing Galaxy S III users to regain full use of their front-facing camera, which as previously stated, is disrupted by the fix.
