alponas: junkyard charterer: Menopause: What It Is and Ways to ...

What is menopause? Menopause is the cessation of a woman?s monthly blood flow. If a woman has not experienced menstrual flow for 12 consecutive months, she is menopausal.

Except in the case of surgery, chemotherapy or specific medical conditions that interfere with regular hormonal functions, menopause occurs at the end of a process, which may last from months to years. During the process, periods may become irregular but not stop and a woman may intermittently experience other symptoms of menopause. When a woman is experiencing symptoms but has not yet been without periods for 12 consecutive months, she is peri-menopausal. A woman may become peri-menopausal as early as her thirties or as late as her fifties.

What are symptoms of menopause? Symptoms of menopause fall into five broad categories:

1) Changes in blood vessel dilation and constriction. This blood vessel activity causes hot ?flashes? and sleep irregularities. Hot flashes are not related to the internal temperature of the body but rather to the temperature of the skin. There are various theories about why, during menopause, women?s skin temperatures may rise periodically as much as 7 degrees. One of the most intriguing theories is that women who experience hot flashes have a very narrow comfort zone ? that zone where they are neither sweating nor chilled. Estrogen seems to widen that zone; conversely lower estrogen narrows the zone. (Studies conducted by Dr. Robert R. Freedman and colleagues, Wayne State Univ., Detroit). Hot flashes contribute to sleep irregularities.

2) Urinary/genital tract changes. Women may experience thinning, drying, itching and bleeding in the vaginal area sometimes associated with pain on intercourse. Another issue may be urinary frequency, urgency or incontinence.

3) Bone changes. Changes in the bones may result in osteopenia (pre-osteoporosis), osteoporosis, joint and muscle pain or back pain.

4) Skin and soft tissue changes. Skin may thin as part of menopause or lose elasticity and breasts may become smaller. These changes are associated with the loss in estrogen that accompanies menopause.

5) Psychological/mood changes. Changes in mood may include irritability and depression or be accompanied by fatigue and memory loss.

How can menopausal discomforts be moderated? Not all women experience menopausal discomfort at a level that it requires therapy. How women experience menopause, a natural stage in the lifecycle of a woman, is in part a matter of genetics, in part a matter of general health and nutrition and in part a matter of culture. There has been great interest lately in the fact that Asian women typically do not engage in hormone replacement therapy or consume dairy products and yet have virtually no osteoporosis as they age and progress through menopause.

1) Self-care. Ideally a self-care program begins well in advance of menopause. Preferably it is a lifelong project. It is never too late to begin, however. Self-care includes good nutrition, effective and regular exercise and mood maintenance.

Good nutrition means the appropriate balance of carbohydrate, protein and fats. Carbohydrates and fats should be of the types that promote health, that is, complex carbohydrates low on the glycemic index and mono-unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fats with the correct balance of omega 3s and omega 6s. For vitamins and minerals, eat a wide range of vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains and beans daily. Maintain the proper Ph balance in the body by limiting dairy products except for probiotics like yogurt. Eliminate simple sugars from the diet as much as possible and focus on getting adequate fiber in the diet.

Establish a daily exercise routine that includes weight bearing exercise, stretching and low-impact aerobic activity. Maintain a healthy weight. Maintain mood with proven techniques like focused breathing, meditation, a gratitude journal, meaningful activity and significant, satisfying relationships.

2) Nutritional approaches. There is a wide range of nutritional alternatives to HRT, often combined with a program of supplementation and /or herbal therapies as well as with the self-care techniques mentioned above. While some sources indicate these alternatives are not clinically proven, they have nonetheless been effective for many women.

Nutritional approaches may include plant estrogens, such as those found in soy products as well as oats, cashews, almonds, alfalfa, apples and flaxseeds. Magnesium can also help to reduce hot flashes. Magnesium is found in soy products and in whole grains and beans. Sufficient dietary fiber can help to reduce irritability. Essential fatty acids can alleviate symptoms of aging, including a reduction in skin elasticity and they can help with dryness in the vaginal region. They also act as natural hormone supplements. Multivitamin/mineral supplements should be chosen with particular attention to their magnesium content. In addition, vitamin E can have a significant impact on vaginal dryness and hot flashes. A variety of herbs have been used, among them, wild yam (for hot flashes), alfalfa, sarsaparilla, motherwort (vaginal dryness), valerian root (promotes sleep), ginseng and black cohosh. Dong quai has been used for centuries in China to provide relief for menopausal symptoms.

3) Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). HRT has been the most common therapy for the symptoms of menopause in the United States. It is particularly effective for hot flashes, virtually eliminating them shortly after therapy is begun. It has long been considered effective in protecting against osteoporosis because of the effect of estrogen in strengthening bone and enhancing calcification.

Following the Women?s Health Initiative Study (WHI) of the National Institutes of Health, halted in July 2002, HRT has become controversial, however. Although hormone replacement has been proved to offer many benefits, including reduced osteoporosis, there are also greater risks associated with it, including breast cancer. Patients and physicians must make the decision about HRT together, based on individual medical situations. Not only is there a decision about whether or not to use HRT but what kind of HRT: unopposed estrogen (estrogen alone), estrogen and progestin, or one or both of those hormones administered along with testosterone. Among the other things a physician will consider with his/her patient is genetic history and age. There are also differences between women with an intact uterus and women without a uterus. While breast cancer is a greater risk for the first, osteoporosis may be a greater risk for the latter. Recent reports suggest that extended use of unopposed estrogen in women who have had a hysterectomy may even reduce breast cancer, although it poses unacceptably high cancer risks to women who have not had a hysterectomy. In the latter case if used, estrogen will probably be accompanied by progestin. There has been recent interest in bioidentical hormone replacement therapies, that is, estrogen and progestin that duplicate the hormones in a woman?s body (as opposed to equine hormonal products). Studies are promising but not yet advanced enough for certainty.

Special issues. Among particular issues that may confront women in relation to the significant physical change that menopause represents are fibroids and osteoporosis. Fibroids are primarily associated with peri-menopause, that is, the time before menopause, which is marked by twelve consecutive months in which there is no menstruation. While osteopenia may begin during the peri-menopausal time, osteoporosis is associated more strongly with menopause and aging.

1) Fibroids. Fibroids are (usually benign) tumors, generally located in the uterus or uterine wall. They may range in size from less than an inch to larger than a grapefruit. Size is often explained by relating it to pregnancy, i.e., eight weeks or twelve weeks. No one is certain exactly what causes fibroids, although generally they shrink after menopause, so estrogen levels may be a factor.

Women are most likely to have fibroids if they are of childbearing age, are African-American, are obese and / or have not had children. Fibroids have been linked to an under active thyroid, so thyroid testing, treatment and monitoring should certainly be part of a preventive reproductive health program. Most women do not experience symptoms. If there are symptoms, they are most likely to include heavy bleeding or painful periods, bleeding between periods, frequent urination, pain during sex, lower back pain, reproductive problems, or a feeling of fullness or swelling in the lower abdomen. Treatments include drugs (pain relievers or medications to reduce the size of the fibroids), surgery (myomectomy, hysterectomy, endometrial ablation, myolisis); and uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). Myomectomy removes the fibroid but leaves the healthy uterine tissue. Hysterectomy removes the entire uterus. Endometrial ablation removes the endometrial lining of the uterus, which relieves heavy bleeding. In myolisis, an electrical needle is inserted into the uterus through a small incision in the abdomen to destroy the blood vessels feeding the fibroid. UFE is a treatment that cuts off the blood supply to the uterus and the fibroids so they shrink. It is becoming an alternative to hysterectomy and myomectomy. Which of these treatments is used must be determined in consultation with a physician. The clinical evidence supporting natural treatments for fibroids is scarce. For the most part, natural treatments are preventive or treat the symptoms but do not address the fibroids themselves once they are in place.

There are some reports that eating less red meat and pork reduces fibroids and some women have reported success with becoming vegetarian. Include raw nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables in the diet as well as foods high in germanium, that is, garlic, shiitake mushrooms and onions that help improve tissue oxygenation. Avoid caffeine, which has been implicated in fibrocystitis. Recommended nutritional supplements include vitamins A, B-complex, C, K and bioflavonoids. Recommended botanical herbs include chaste tree, ginger, cranesbill, shepherd?s purse, ragwort, blue cohosh and false unicorn as well as ginseng, rhubarb, cinnamon and sargassum seaweed in various combinations. These treatments and appropriate combinations must be discussed with a naturopath.

2) Osteopenia, Osteoporosis. Bone constantly reforms throughout our lives. Cells called osteoclasts reabsorb bone material while cells called osteoblasts generate new bone material. As people age, the process of reabsorbing bone material outstrips the process of generating new bone material.

Osteopenia and the more advanced osteoporosis represent an imbalance in reabsorbtion / bone generation in which osteoclasts are more active than osteoblasts, a situation caused by a reduction in estrogen. Estrogen has an important role in the strengthening and calcification of bone. A drop in estrogen at the time of menopause may also be associated with a decreased ability of the body to absorb calcium efficiently. One of the problems in how the news of the Women?s Health Initiative was brought to the public was that the increased risk of breast cancer demonstrated in some segments of the study were highlighted and other aspects of the health risks associated with aging and with menopause obscured. There is a feeling among some specialists that as a result, women are being advised to abandon HRT, at great risk to their future health. There are reports indicating that the greater danger is osteoporotic fracture and consequent disability and confinement to nursing homes at a much younger age than might otherwise be required.

The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW): Where were you on iPhone launch day six years ago?

It's hard to believe that six years ago today -- June 29, 2007 -- was the first time that anyone other than Steve Jobs and a handful of Apple employees got their hands on an iPhone. I asked my fellow TUAW bloggers to join me with what they remember about that special day, and here's the result:

Steve Sande

In 2007, I wasn't yet writing for TUAW. I had my own blog at the time called "The iPhone Ranch" that I had started up a couple of weeks before. So on launch day, I woke up really early and drove four miles over to the Aspen Grove Apple Store in Littleton, CO where I found that I was about the fortieth person in line. The line kept growing on that hot day -- I think there were several hundred people by the the time the doors opened.

I caught video with my camcorder that day (before the good video from the iPhone showed up) and caught the excitement -- and the excruciating boredom of waiting outside in the heat all day. It's interesting to see how different Apple Stores were back in the day. Here's the video:

Kelly Hodgkins

In June 2007, I was expecting our sixth child, and a new iPhone was not on my priority list. I was intrigued by it no doubt, but I was a Verizon Wireless customer and the iPhone was AT&T only. AT&T didn't have coverage in my area and wouldn't let me sign up for service. I watched from the sidelines as the world bought the iPhone and raved about it. I was still on Windows Mobile and dying inside every minute.

A few months later, I eventually relented and bought the iPhone by driving across state borders to an area that had service. Sadly, I had to return the iPhone because a phone isn't much of a phone if you can't make calls. I bought an iPod touch instead, but it wasn't the same. I tried the iPhone again with the 3GS and still no coverage. I finally joined the iPhone revolution in full when Verizon got the iPhone 4. I stayed up until 3 AM to pre-order it online and haven't looked back since.

Mike Schramm

I lived in Chicago back in 2007, and as an editor on TUAW, I was out covering the iPhone's launch. I put a gallery together of the launch at the Michigan Ave. Apple Store, and I took video of the launch at both that store and the State Street location. I also rounded up a series of reports from all over the country, with people waiting in line and picking up their brand new "magical" iPhones.

I didn't buy an iPhone myself on launch day, though. My purchase came a month or so later, I believe. And I've since moved on, skipping every other generation, to an iPhone 4, and now a 5. I've never preordered an iPhone -- I've always just waited a week or two and purchased it in the store without a problem. But who knows? Maybe the next iteration is the one that will get me to jump on it right away.

Erica Sadun

Family was visiting that weekend, so I couldn't get out until, if memory serves, Sunday. I called up the local store, found out a truck had just arrived -- hopped over, bought a phone, and was out of there in minutes. What followed, trying to get it activated through AT&T on was a bit of a nightmare, but the actual purchase was just fine. I spent an entire day waiting as the (kind) AT&T people attempted to get the phone going. Eventually it worked, and the world became something new, wonderful, and exciting. A brave new frontier of mobile computing had just opened up.

Victor Agreda Jr.

After plumbing the depths of my Gmail, I remember! I went to the Knoxville Apple Store in the mall and wrote this up:

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/06/29/knoxville-has-a-line-waiting-for-iphones/

My brother got one (not me), and later that day I went to his apartment and took some pics of it. Pretty boring. I had a corporate BlackBerry and no money to afford one, let alone "go AT&T" haha.

My Verizon zinger has surely stood the test of time.

John-Michael Bond

I was still using a flip phone and was making fun of my friends for thinking they needed to spend over 400 dollars on a phone.

Richard Gaywood

No great story here. I think I followed along on a liveblog, because I'd made some (in hindsight quite accurate) guesses and I wanted to see how on the money I was. I was stuck in a contract on a (bloody awful) Windows phone at the time, and in the end I waited out the first iPhone entirely and skipped straight to the 3G. The iPhone 1 didn't launch in the UK for some prolonged amount of time anyway -- six months or so, I think.

Chris Rawson

I was at work, at PR Newswire in Cleveland. I wasn't the least bit interested in the iPhone at the time. I knew I'd be moving to New Zealand the next year, so committing to (and then breaking) a two-year contract with AT&T (barf) wasn't going to happen.

The price also turned me off. "$600 for a phone?! That's more than a PlayStation 3 costs, and the PS3 does way more." This statement has, of course, become utterly ridiculous in hindsight; I have spent north of NZ$1000 on an iPhone three times now (will be four when the next one comes out), and my PS3 is dead from its third "yellow light of death" failure and sitting in a closet.

Yoni Heisler

Alas, my iPhone story isn't terribly exciting. Stuck on Sprint at the time, and like Chris, intimidated by the unsubsidized pricetag, I wasn't able to pick up an iPhone on launch day.

I did, however, trek down to the downtown Apple store in Chicago where I waited in line (inside the store) to finally get my hands on this magical device. I remember being particularly impressed with the weather app (swipe to the left.. a whole new city!)

Ah, times were simpler back then :)

Michael Grothaus

I was being briefed by Apple and being told I would need to be in AT&T's flagship store in Chicago for the launch. I have pics of the lines from launch day while I'm safely in the store playing with the iPhone.

Best part of that day was explaining to the Chicago White Sox owner that I didn't care who he was, I couldn't hold a phone for him; he needed to stand in line like everyone else.

Mike Rose

I'm not sure I remember... but I do know that during the Macworld keynote I was on the phone with Laurie Duncan, who was standing outside the Moscone auditorium watching on a repeater monitor. "iPhone -- they're calling it iPhone," she said, but I could barely hear her over the roar.

I have a print of Duncan Davidson's "Monolith" photo now. Need to get it framed. http://duncandavidson.com/blog/2011/10/iphone_2007/

ECB puts eligibility of Cyprus?s debt on hold

The image is the signboard of the embattled Bank of Cyprus in Nicosia.

On Friday, the European Central Bank said it was putting the eligibility of Cyprus's debt on hold, for the time being. The procedural measure would take place due to the bank's need to refinance its operations.

Like Us on Facebook

The update came from Cyprus on Thursday when it said it was initiating a debt exchange. The move includes trading Euro 1 billion of state bonds for up-to-date, longer-dated arrears. This could aid the Euro zone member to meet the terms of its bail out project.

The ECB's move was believed to be temporary. It said in a report, "The Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB) has decided to temporarily suspend the eligibility of marketable debt instruments issued or fully guaranteed by the Republic of Cyprus for use as collateral in Eurosystem monetary policy operations."

"This decision takes into account the changes in the credit rating of the Republic of Cyprus as a result of the transactions announced by the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Cyprus on 27 June 2013," it added. "In line with established procedures, the Governing Council of the ECB will assess the potential eligibility of marketable debt instruments issued or fully guaranteed by the Republic of Cyprus again upon the conclusion of the above-mentioned transactions."

China urged to end forced resettlements in Tibet

BEIJING (Reuters) - A human rights group appealed to China on Thursday to end what it called forced "mass rehousing and relocation" of ethnic Tibetans that it said had uprooted more than two million people in the past seven years.

The report, by New York-based Human Rights Watch, said Chinese authorities threw lives into disarray by denying rights to forcibly relocated ethnic Tibetans with insufficient compensation, sub-par housing and lack of help in finding jobs.

"The scale and speed at which the Tibetan rural population is being remodeled by mass rehousing and relocation policies are unprecedented in the post-Mao era," said Human Rights Watch China Director Sophie Richardson.

"Tibetans have no say in the design of policies that are radically altering their way of life, and - in an already highly repressive context - no ways to challenge them."

More than two million Tibetans had been relocated in Tibet since 2006, as well as hundreds of thousands of nomadic herders in the eastern part of the Tibetan plateau such as in Qinghai province, the report said.

The aim of the program, it added, was in part to help economically, but also to combat separatist sentiment "and is designed to strengthen political control over the Tibetan rural population".

Phone calls to the Tibet autonomous region government office seeking comment were not answered.

Violence has flared in Tibet since 1950, when Beijing says it "peacefully liberated" the region. Many Tibetans say Chinese rule has eroded their culture and religion and agitate for the return of their spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, who fled into exile in 1959 after an abortive uprising against Chinese rule.

The Chinese government, which brands the Dalai Lama a dangerous "splittist", denies trampling on Tibetan rights and boasts of having brought prosperity to the region and ending serfdom.

Since 2009, at least 117 Tibetans have committed acts of self-immolation in China in protest against Beijing's policies. More than 90 have died.

But in a possible sign of China loosening some restrictions, authorities in Tibetan-populated areas of Qinghai and Sichuan provinces are allowing monks to openly respect the Dalai Lama as a religious leader, although not as a political figure, Radio Free Asia said.

While the move appears limited to Sichuan and Qinghai, it nevertheless contradicts the long-time Chinese policy of prohibiting veneration of the Dalai Lama, Radio Free Asia said, citing sources who in turn cited official documents introducing the experimental policy.

Verizon reportedly offers more than $600 million to buy Wind Mobile

Wind Mobile store

Verizon's curiosity about entering the Canadian market could represent more than just a brief fascination: Reuters claims that Big Red has made a "tentative" bid for Wind Mobile. While the exact price would depend on what Verizon finds in Wind's accounting books, the estimated value ranges from $600 million to $800 million. Neither party is commenting on the rumor, although Verizon may still be open to alternative deals -- it supposedly approached Mobilicity about a potential acquisition. Verizon will likely need permission from both the Canadian government and Vodafone to make any takeover attempt official, but the reported bidding suggests that the company is willing to brave the gauntlet for some 700MHz spectrum and a presence up North.

Lawyers file appeal to halt 5th Nigerian execution

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? Human rights lawyers have filed an urgent appeal to try to prevent Nigerian authorities from executing a convicted armed robber by firing squad, two organizations said Thursday.

The suit filed Wednesday argues it is unconstitutional to deny an appeal to the man sentenced by a military tribunal in 1995, when Nigeria was under military dictatorship.

They said Thankgod Ebhos has been in prison since 1988. In 1995, when Nigeria was still under military dictatorship, he was tried under a section of the Robbery and Firearms Act that does not allow for an appeal against a judgment of a military tribunal. Ebhos was sentenced while Nigeria was under a military dictatorship notorious for unfair trials and torturing confessions from detainees.

On Monday, Ebhos was dragged to the gallows where he watched four fellow death-row inmates hanged at Benin State Prison in southern Edo state.

The hangings ended a seven-year moratorium on the death penalty in Nigeria.

Ebhos was reprieved because prison officials were not equipped to carry out his sentence of shooting by a firing squad, said Edo state Attorney General Henry Idahagbon.

"Why they have been in prison so long and not executed I do not know and cannot say," he told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. He blamed "some people not wanting to do their job" ? an apparent reference to President Goodluck Jonathan's recent statements which urged governors to sign death warrants, no matter how painful they find it.

Idahagbon, who is also the state commissioner for justice, said he did not know when Ebhos may be executed. "I'm speculating but suspect prison authorities have to work with the military authorities to have the convict shot," he said.

"Any execution of the sentence of death passed on him by the military tribunal will be unlawful and further undermine respect for the rule of law in Nigeria," said the statement signed by director Justine Ijeomah of the Human Rights, Social Development and Environmental Foundation and Chino Obiagwu of the Legal Defense and Assistance Project.

The appeal was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, Nigeria's capital.

Wear This LED Tetris Tie To Any Job Interview and You're Hired

Navy robotics engineer Bill Porter designed and built this fantastic Tetris-playing LED tie in a mere four hours to impress a roomful of eighth graders. But the wonderful LED light show that automatically plays Tetris on its own should impress anyone who's ever had to kill time at work, and didn't have access to Solitaire.

Some 80 multi-color LEDs wired to a DigiSpark microcontroller are controlled by a stripped-down self-playing version of Tetris that?for the time being at least?randomly fall and move about the tie. All-in-all the project only cost Bill about $50, but being able to impress a group of thirteen year olds who've probably never actually played Tetris? That's priceless. Huawei Ascend W2 shows up prematurely, packs colormatching backlit soft keys handson

After the official product shot leaked in late May, we knew it wouldn't be long before Huawei's Ascend W2 makes an official appearance. Well, today's the day, but as the company's second-ever Windows Phone device, the W2's appearance at Mobile Asia Expo was surprisingly low key. According to the spec sheet at Huawei's booth, this affordable phone comes with a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 display (looked like IPS to us) and a 1.4GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8230 SoC (same as the W1 but faster) with 512MB RAM. There's 8GB of built-in storage along with microSD expansion -- the slot is located next to the removable 1,700mAh battery plus full-size SIM slot, all underneath the red or yellow back cover.

Even though Huawei doesn't hide the fact that the W2 is a low-cost device, it's actually not too shabby. Most notably, the three usual soft keys are color backlit and will match your desired theme in Windows Phone 8. As a bonus, the touchscreen has a glove mode -- as featured on several other more recent Huawei phones -- for the cold winter days. There's still no price or date announced just yet, but since this particular model packs a TD-SCDMA radio for China Mobile, folks outside China will have to wait for the WCDMA variant. For now, we have a hands-on video for you after the break.

Veteran heavy-metal band Black Sabbath landed its first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 album chart this past Wednesday, more than four decades after the rockers debuted their first album in the United States.

"13," the 19th studio album from Black Sabbath, sold 155,000 copies in its first week, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan, knocking last week's No. 1 album by Queens of the Stone Age off the top spot on the weekly U.S. album chart.

But the album fell one spot to second place on the British charts this week.
Black Sabbath, an English rock band fronted by lead singer Ozzy Osbourne, released their debut self-titled album in North America in 1970, but were never able to notch the top spot on the Billboard 200 album chart in a career spanning 43 years.

"The news is absolutely amazing - we couldn't have imagined this would happen," guitarist and founding member Tony Iommi said in a statement. Osbourne added, "to finally have our first No. 1 album in the U.S. is another incredible milestone for Black Sabbath."

French electronic duo Daft Punk held steady for the second week at No. 2 with "Random Access Memories," which has sold 543,000 copies since its release on May 18.

Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience" saw a surge in sales last week after the album was discounted for Father's Day, with 35,000 copies sold and climbing from No. 9 to No. 3.

Country band Florida Georgia Line also benefited from Father's Day promotion sale prices, as their album "Here's to the Good Times" climbing back into the top 10 at No. 5.

Black Sabbath was one of five new debut albums in the top ten this past week.

Boy band Big Time Rush came in at No. 4 with "24/Seven," alternative-rockers Goo Goo Dolls landed at No. 8 with their latest record "Magnetic," and movie score maestro Hans Zimmer's soundtrack for Superman movie "Man of Steel" flew into No. 9.

Comedy trio The Lonely Island, fronted by former "Saturday Night Live" cast member Andy Samberg, rounded out the top 10 with their latest collection of parodies, "The Wack Album."

Overall album sales totaled 5.25 million for the week ending June 16, down 10 percent from the comparable sales week in 2012, according to Billboard.

This week's chart is likely to see a high debut from rapper Kanye West, who released his latest record "Yeezus" this past week and is currently at the top of the iTunes album chart.

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil (AP) ? Demanding better public services and angered by World Cup costs, about 100,000 people are expected at a protest Wednesday before Brazil plays Uruguay in the Confederations Cup semifinals.

Officials have declared a holiday in Belo Horizonte and authorities are expecting confrontations with the demonstrators.

Belo Horizonte has had some of the most violent clashes between police and protesters since the country was swept by a wave of demonstrations calling for better education, transportation and health services.

There were no major protests in the city Tuesday. But groups closed three main roads, insisting that public officials pay more attention to their demands.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter will be in Belo Horizonte on Wednesday.

Supreme Court strikes down DOMA; rules it interferes with states, ?dignity? of same-sex marriages

The Supreme Court released two major decisions expanding gay rights across the country on Wednesday as hordes of cheering demonstrators greeted the news outside. The justices struck down a federal law barring the recognition of same-sex marriage in a split decision, ruling that the law violates the rights of gays and lesbians and intrudes into states' rights to define and regulate marriage. The court also dismissed a case involving California's gay marriage ban, ruling that supporters of the ban did not have the legal standing, or right, to appeal a lower court's decision striking down Proposition 8 as discriminatory.

The decision clears the way for gay marriage to again be legal in the nation's most populous state, even though the justices did not address the broader legal argument that gay people have a fundamental right to marriage.

The twin decisions throw the fight over gay marriage back to the states, because the court ruled the federal government must recognize the unions if states sanction them, but did not curtail states' rights to ban gay marriage if they choose.

Justice Anthony Kennedy, the court's conservative-leaning swing vote with a legal history of supporting gay rights, joined his liberal colleagues in the DOMA decision, which will dramatically expand the rights of married gay couples in the country to access more than 1,000 federal benefits and responsibilities of marriage previously denied them.

"The avowed purpose and practical effect of the law here in question are to impose a disadvantage, a separate status, and so a stigma upon all who enter into same-sex marriages made lawful by the unquestioned authority of the States," Kennedy wrote of DOMA. He concluded that states must be allowed by the federal government to confer "dignity" on same-sex couples if they choose to legalize gay marriage. DOMA "undermines" same-sex marriages in visible ways and "tells those couples, and all the world, that their otherwise valid marriages are unworthy of federal recognition."

Eighty-three-year-old New Yorker Edith Windsor brought the DOMA suit after she was made to pay more than $363,000 in estate taxes when her same-sex spouse died. If the federal government had recognized her marriage, Windsor would not have owed the sum. She argued that the government has no rational reason to exclude her marriage (she and her late partner, Thea Spyer, had been married since 2007, and together for more than four decades) from the benefits and obligations other married couples receive.

DOMA, which was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1996, prevented the government from granting marriage benefits in more than 1,000 federal statutes to same-sex married couples in the 12 states and District of Columbia that allow gay marriage. Clinton, who disavowed the law earlier this year, released a statement congratulating Windsor on her victory. Attorney General Eric Holder said the Justice Department would "work expeditiously" to implement the decision, and called it a "triumph for equal protection under the law for all Americans."

With this decision, Kennedy furthers his reputation as a defender of gay rights from the bench. He wrote two of the most important Supreme Court decisions involving, and ultimately affirming, gay rights: Lawrence v. Texas (2003) and Romer v. Evans (1996). In Romer, Kennedy struck down Colorado's constitutional amendment banning localities from passing anti-discrimination laws protecting gays and lesbians. In Lawrence, Kennedy invalidated state anti-sodomy laws, ruling that gay people have a right to engage in sexual behavior in their own homes free from the fear of punishment.

Legal experts said the DOMA decision lays the foundation for a future Supreme Court ruling that could find a broader right for same-sex couples to marry.

The decisions mark the first time the highest court has waded into the issue of same-sex marriage. Just 40 years ago, the Supreme Court tersely refused to hear a case brought by a gay couple who wanted to get married in Minnesota, writing that their claim raised no significant legal issue. At the time, legal opinions often treated homosexuality as criminal, sexually deviant behavior rather than involuntary sexual orientation.

Since then, public opinion has changed dramatically on gay people and same-sex marriage, with a majority of Americans only just recently saying they support gay unions. Now, 12 states representing about 18 percent of the U.S. population allow same-sex marriage. With California, the percentage of people living in gay marriage states shoots up to 30.

With the Proposition 8 decision, the Supreme Court refused to wade into the constitutional issues surrounding the California gay marriage case, dismissing the Proposition 8 argument on procedural grounds. The legal dodge means a lower court's ruling making same-sex marriage legal in California will most likely stand, opening the door to marriage to gays and lesbians in the country's most populous state without directly ruling on whether gay people have a constitutional right to marriage.

California voters passed Proposition 8 to ban same-sex marriage in 2008, after 18,000 same-sex couples had already tied the knot under a state Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage. A same-sex married couple with children, Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, sued the state of California when their 6-month-old marriage was invalidated by the ballot initiative. They argued that Proposition 8 discriminated against them and their union based only on their sexual orientation, and that the state had no rational reason for denying them the right to marry. Two lower courts ruled in their favor, and then-California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced he would no longer defend Proposition 8 in court, leaving a coalition of Proposition 8 supporters led by a former state legislator to take up its defense.

Chief Justice John Roberts joined with Antonin Scalia, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan to rule the defenders of Proposition 8 did not have the standing to defend the ban in court. The unlikely coalition of liberals and conservatives argued that the Proposition 8 supporters could not prove they were directly injured by the lower court's decision to overturn the ban and allow gay people to marry.

Same-sex marriage will most likely not be immediately legal in California, because the Ninth Circuit has several weeks to confirm the court's decision. California officials have asked county clerks offices to prepare to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples as soon as the decision is confirmed.

The Proposition 8 case was argued by two high-profile lawyers, Ted Olson and David Boies, who previously faced off against each other in Bush v. Gore. Olson, a conservative and Bush's former solicitor general, and Boies, a liberal, have cast gay marriage as the civil rights issue of our time.

Boies said on the steps of the Supreme Court on Wednesday that the court had shown gay marriage does not harm society. "Today the United States Supreme Court said as much," Boies said. "They cannot point to anything that harms them because these two love each other.?

President Barack Obama also reportedly called Chad Griffin, the president of the Human Rights Campaign gay rights group, to congratulate him on the legal victory. "We're proud of you guys, and we're proud to have this in California," the president said, according to audio on MSNBC.

"The laws of our land are catching up to the fundamental truth that millions of Americans hold in our hearts: When all Americans are treated as equal, no matter who they are or whom they love, we are all more free," the president said in a statement.

Olson made the argument that gay marriage should be a conservative cause in a recent interview with NPR. "If you are a conservative, how could you be against a relationship in which people who love one another want to publicly state their vows ... and engage in a household in which they are committed to one another and become part of the community and accepted like other people?" he asked.

The Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group, a coalition of mostly Republican House lawmakers, defended DOMA after the Obama administration announced it believed the law was unconstitutional in 2011. (Roberts criticized the president for this move during oral arguments in the case, saying the president lacked ?the courage of his convictions? in continuing to enforce the law but no longer defending it in court.)

"While I am obviously disappointed in the ruling, it is always critical that we protect our system of checks and balances," House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in a statement. "A robust national debate over marriage will continue in the public square, and it is my hope that states will define marriage as the union between one man and one woman."

Faith and Freedom Coalition Chairman Ralph Reed said in a statement that his political advocacy group would push for federal legislation to try to restore DOMA. He called the decision "an Orwellian act of judicial fiat."

Disney renames Mouseketeer stage for Funicello

BURBANK, Calif. (AP) ? The stage at Walt Disney Studios where "The Mickey Mouse Club" was filmed is now officially the Annette Funicello Stage.

Disney chief Bob Iger led a ceremony Monday dedicating the soundstage to Funicello, the Mouseketeer-turned-movie star who died in April at age 70.

Iger confessed to having a crush on Funicello when he was growing up, as many who watched the perky brunette on TV did.

Former Mouseketeers, Funicello's family and colleagues and Mickey Mouse himself also participated in Monday's dedication. Frankie Avalon, Richard Sherman and Leonard Maltin were among those honoring the late actress.

Julie Andrews is the only other entertainer to have a namesake stage at Disney studios.

The High Performance GeoComputing Laboratory (HPGeoC) at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), an organized research unit at the University of California, San Diego, was named a winner of the HPC Innovation Excellence Award by the International Data Corporation (IDC) for developing a highly-scalable computer code that promises to dramatically cut both research times and energy costs in simulating seismic hazards throughout California and elsewhere.

The announcement of the award's recipients came during the ISC'13 supercomputing industry conference in Leipzig, Germany. The award recognizes "noteworthy achievements by users of high performance computing (HPC) technologies", particularly "scientific success stories involving HPC."

"We are grateful to IDC for this award which recognizes our efforts to speed regional earthquake simulations for use in earthquake engineering and disaster management as part of a larger computational effort coordinated by the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC)," said Yifeng Cui, a computational scientist at SDSC and the leader of the HPGeoC lab, jointly funded by SCEC.

The IDC award cites Cui's team for the development of a highly scalable and efficient code -- using GPUs (graphical processing units) as opposed to CPUs, or central processing units that accelerate a widely-used wave propagation code called AWP-ODC, which stands for Anelastic Wave Propagation by Olsen, Day, and Cui (named for Kim Olsen and Steven Day, geological science professors at San Diego State University and SDSC's Cui). This community code, developed and supported by SCEC, simulates the dynamic rupture and wave propagation that occurs during large-scale earthquakes.

The GPU code was restructured to maximize throughput for reduced time-to-solution, achieving a sustained 2.3 petaflops (quadrillion calculations per second) on a recent benchmark run for a problem twice as large as the previous M8, a magnitude-8 earthquake simulation on the southern San Andreas fault (http://www.sdsc.edu/News%20Items/PR081910_m8_earthqua.html). The Titan supercomputer, based at Oak Ridge National Laboratories and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, was used for this simulation. Titan is equipped with Cray XK7 systems and NVIDIA's Tesla K20X GPU accelerators.

Moreover, the restructured code resulted in a 110-fold speedup over a heavily optimized CPU code for a key strain tensor calculation critical to probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA), a standard used by decision-makers to help reduce seismic risk and increase community response to earthquakes.

"The results are expected to take physics-based seismic hazard analysis to a new level with petascale computers, with the potential of saving hundreds of millions of core-hours of computing time," said Cui.

Also contributing to the code's development was Jun Zhou and Efecan Poyraz, graduate students of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) with the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego; Dong Ju Choi, a computational scientist at SDSC; and Clark Guest, associate professor of ECE.

Other winners of this year's HPC Innovation Excellence Awards are Alenia Aermacchi (Italy); DOD High Performance Computing Modernization Program; ESTECO and Airworks Engineering (Italy); University College London and NAG HECTOR dCSE (UK); Bottero S. p. A. (Italy); Polestar Racing (Sweden); and RENCI (US).

Innovative Woman Uses Toilet Plunger On Tokyo Subway In Hilarious (Or Gross) Lifehack

We can't decide if this picture is super awesome or super concerning; it all hinges on where that plunger's previously been.

This viral picture of a woman apparently using a toilet plunger to keep her balance on a Tokyo subway car is either a brilliant lifehack or a rather disgusting display of laziness. According to Rocket News 24, reaction to the straphanger on Japanese social media has been mixed, with some applauding her innovation and others worrying about what she might be transferring to the ceiling.

However, Gothamist, a New York blog that has seen its share of poop on subways, writes that perhaps "we can all learn something from this young woman, who re-contextualized her toilet plunger and put it to far better use in a Tokyo subway car."

For now, we'll just file this photo away with pictures of this woman chopping an onion on the subway and this man sitting in a La-Z-Boy.

Happy commuting, everybody.

Texas Abortion Bill: Republican Lawmakers Approve Tough New Restrictions

AUSTIN, Texas ? Texas Democrats are stalling the passage of new abortion restrictions by not arriving in time for the resumption of a House session to approve the proposed law.

After debating Senate Bill 5 until 3:30 a.m. Monday, the Democratic minority didn't show up by 6:46 a.m. when the House was scheduled to reconvene.

Without the Democrats, the House cannot reach a quorum to approve the bill.

The measure would ban abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy, require doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals and limit abortions to surgical centers.

Supporters say the bill would improve women's health care. Opponents warn it would shut down 37 out of 42 abortion clinics in the state.

The bill still must go to the Senate, where Democrats hope to filibuster it Tuesday.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Republicans used their majority to cut short debate and give preliminary approval early Monday to some of the toughest abortion restrictions in the country as time was running out on the Texas Legislature's special session.

Many members of the conservative majority had flyers on their desks that read "Psalm 139:13-14," which reads in part: "You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made."

Democrats gained strength from more than 800 demonstrators who packed the hallways of the Capitol carrying signs reading, "Stop the War on Women," to oppose Senate Bill 5. The measure would ban abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy, require doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals and limit abortions to surgical centers.

Supporters say the bill will raise the standard of women's health care. Opponents say the bill would shut down 37 out of 42 abortion clinics in the state.

"If this passes, abortion would be virtually banned in the state of Texas, and many women could be forced to resort to dangerous and unsafe measures," said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund and daughter of the late former Texas governor Ann Richards.

Democrats used parliamentary tactics to draw out the debate for 15 hours, pointing out technical mistakes in the process or trying to tack on amendments to fundamentally change the bill. Republicans remained largely silent, until finally passing a motion to stop accepting amendments and force a vote, a highly unusual and partisan move.

"We are willing to have an attack on women in order to have someone's political agenda achieved," Rep. Sylvester Turner, D-Houston, said in opposition to stopping debate on the bill. "It may be in the dark of night now ... but the sun will shine on each and every one of us, and we will be held accountable."

Republicans, though, needed to end debate and move the process forward in order to make a midnight Tuesday deadline, when the session ends. House members must still give final approval to the bill, and then it must sit for 24 hours before the Senate can consider it.

The bill's sponsor stopped answering questions about her bill after the first two hours after she got into trouble denying Democratic amendments. When Rep. Senfronia Thompson, D-Houston, called for an exemption for women who were victims of rape and incest, Rep. Jody Laubenberg, R-Parker, explained why she felt it was unnecessary.

"In the emergency room they have what's called rape kits where a woman can get cleaned out," she said, comparing the procedure to an abortion. "The woman had five months to make that decision, at this point we are looking at a baby that is very far along in its development."

Her apparent confusion about "rape kits" ? a phrase generally used to describe the equipment used by medical personnel during forensic examinations to gather physical evidence following allegations of rape or sexual assault ? sparked widespread ridicule on social media sites. Laubenberg, who has difficulty debating bills, then simply rejected all proposed changes to her bill without speaking until the end of the debate.

"At five months, we are talking about a human being, unless you think it's still a clump of mass ... and we have to protect that baby's rights," Laubenberg said in her closing argument. "Too often the back alley clinic today is the abortion clinic because of lax standards."

Three Democrats joined the Republican majority and voted for the bill 97-33. Protesters jeered their disapproval as security guards ordered them out of the chamber and they regrouped to protest outside.

The Texas Medical Association, the Texas Hospital Association and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists had sent letters urging lawmakers to vote no on the bill, saying it would not raise the standard of care.

Rep. Jessica Farrar, D-Houston, gave a personal privilege speech decrying how the Republicans were manipulating the parliamentary process to rush it to a vote.

"Everything about the process related to these abortion regulation bills has smelled like partisan politics," Farrar said. "Proponents of the bill have failed to demonstrate any evidence that the regulations imposed by these bills are necessary. Nor have they expressed any sign of responsible governance in ensuring that women will continue to be able to access safe and legal abortion care."

Democrats in the Senate said they would try to filibuster the bill if it came to them on Tuesday, which now appears assured.

Gov. Rick Perry added abortion to the special session in the final two weeks, after lawmakers had already taken up redistricting.
