Ohio students mark school shooting anniversary with wreaths, vigil

CHARDON, Ohio (Reuters) - Students clad in red-and-black school colors walked a mile on Wednesday in a procession from Ohio's Chardon High School to lay wreaths in the town square, marking a year since a shooting rampage in which three former classmates were killed.

Chardon, a small town about 40 miles east of Cleveland, was once known mainly for the county syrup festival, but along with communities in Connecticut, Colorado, Arkansas and Virginia, is now remembered for a school shooting spree.

On Wednesday, more than 100 people, including friends and relatives and police and firefighters from surrounding cities, joined the students at the square for the ceremony where the wreaths were placed beneath framed photographs of the three slain students.

A year ago, T.J. Lane, then 17, fired 10 rounds from a .22-caliber pistol at students gathered in a cafeteria at Chardon High School.

Demetrius Hewlin, 16, Russell King Jr., 17, and Daniel Parmertor, 16, were killed. Nick Walczak, who was paralyzed from the waist down, Nate Mueller and Joy Rickers were wounded.

Some Chardon students made blankets for child-trauma sufferers or collars for service dogs to mark the day. A candle-light vigil and concert were occurring on Wednesday night. Afterward, students were to release lanterns in a private event at the school.

"I'm glad this ... marker is over. It will help them put what happened behind us," said Mary Loder, whose daughter, Rachel, co-founded Chardon High School's chapter of the Linus Project, a group that makes blankets for traumatized children.

Loder, her husband, George Loder, and their children delivered blankets to Newtown, Connecticut, to support grieving residents after 20 children and six adults were shot and killed at an elementary school there in December.

Lane, who was quickly captured nearby and confessed that he had fired the shots, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to six counts including aggravated murder. He faces up to life in prison without parole at sentencing, which is scheduled for March 19.

School Superintendent Joseph Bergant told those gathered that he hoped the events "offer some control over how the impact of this event affects us."

The school shooting at Newtown ignited a national debate about gun violence and a push from some in Congress for expanded background checks aimed at keeping firearms out of the hands of convicted criminals and the mentally ill.

The Senate Judiciary Committee could vote as early as Thursday on four separate gun-control bills, including a proposed ban on assault weapons. The bills are likely to be approved by the Democratic-led Judiciary Committee and be considered by the full Senate, congressional aides said on Tuesday.

Ohio state representatives observed a moment of silence on Wednesday in remembrance of the shooting, and Chardon state Representative John Patterson said he would introduce a bill to designate highways in the names of the three slain students.

Italy's showman Berlusconi pulls off another surprise

ROME (Reuters) - Billionaire showman Silvio Berlusconi has again pulled off an astonishing fight-back from scandal and humiliation, coming within a whisker of success in Italy's election.

Before the Feb 24-25 vote, pollsters and analysts widely predicted this would be the media magnate's last hurrah and he would be clearly beaten by his center-left foes. They said he would eventually disappear from the scene.

Instead, Berlusconi was one of the big winners alongside the populist leader and comedian Beppe Grillo, defying polls and building substantial negotiating power for tortuous talks on how to form a new government despite a deeply uncertain result.

His success is a qualified one for sure and cannot hide the fact that his People of Freedom (PDL) party has slumped to almost half the 38 percent of votes it won in a landslide victory in 2008.

But compared with expectations it was a shock. His brother's il Giornale newspaper reflected his supporters' relief and joy with a giant front page headline reading "Berlusconi Miracle."

Berlusconi himself is said to be disappointed that he didn't win outright, but he is set to seize almost as many seats in the Senate as his center-left rivals. In the lower house his center-right coalition lost out on a giant winner's premium by less than one percentage point.

Combined with the extraordinary success of Grillo, this has deadlocked parliament in a result that left Italy's future uncertain and unnerved global markets.

Such a success seemed unimaginable only two months ago, except to pundits who have learned never to underestimate the former cruise ship crooner during his two decades at the center of the political stage.

The 76-year-old four-times prime minister looked down and out for much of 2012 after a jeering crowd hounded him from office in November 2011 with Italy tottering towards a Greek-style debt crisis.

Months of indecision over whether to stand in the election brought his PDL to the brink of disintegration with less than 15 percent in the polls.

But since precipitating the fall of his successor, technocrat Mario Monti, in December and diving into the campaign, Berlusconi has shown unrivalled mastery of communication and energy belying his age.

"Berlusconi was a poor prime minister but is a very tough campaigner, he never gives up," said commentator Massimo Franco.

FACE LIFTS

Italy's longest-serving prime minister is known for off-the-cuff humor, diplomatic gaffes and his facelifts, perennial tan, make-up and hair weave. Embroiled almost constantly in scandal, including currently a lurid sex trial, Berlusconi's success has always been a mystery abroad.

But his flamboyant persona hides a keen political mind and an almost uncanny talent for responding to the fears and concerns of ordinary Italians.

His success in clawing back a 10-point center-left lead in December is down to three factors.

He homed in on a painful housing tax imposed by Monti that is deeply hated by Italians. His offer to pay it back was mocked by his opponents but scored with many conservative voters especially pensioners suffering badly in the longest recession for 20 years.

He attacked German hegemony in Europe and accused Monti of being a puppet of Chancellor Angela Merkel and imposing austerity policies at her behest - another theme that resonates with many Italians sick of recession and soaring unemployment.

The final factor is that he was, in the words of one Italian on a radio phone-in program on Tuesday, "shooting at an open goal" because of the terrible campaigns run by both Monti and center-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani.

Bersani's Democratic Party (PD) was in disarray on Tuesday after kissing away their commanding opinion poll lead and almost losing the election because of the rise of Grillo and Berlusconi.

Neither the colorless Bersani nor economics professor Monti could compete with Berlusconi's antics including a storm of television appearances in which he rarely lost his cool and showed a talent for rapid quips that some Italians would laugh about for days afterwards.

When the increasingly exasperated Monti accused Berlusconi of being a pied piper leading Italians astray, the media magnate shot back that he would probably try to tax his flute.

Monti, who disastrously tried to turn himself from a stately and respected technocrat into a mud-slinging political fighter, slumped in the polls with his centrist alliance winning little over 10 percent, half their target.

FOREIGN ALARM

Analysts said before the vote that the result investors feared most would be a Berlusconi victory, but now he has a chance of returning to government in a possibly uncomfortable and short-term alliance with the center-left.

He had to renounce his candidacy for prime minister however, to win a crucial electoral alliance with the federalist Northern League which successfully boosted center-right votes in battleground northern regions. The League rank and file are wary of Berlusconi and his scandal-plagued reputation.

As he climbed the ratings in recent weeks, the nervousness in European capitals, particularly his favorite target Germany, was palpable.

But calls by European politicians to vote for Monti and not Berlusconi only played into the former premier's hands, creating resentment at foreign interference and damaging the outgoing prime minister.

Berlusconi had for years seemed virtually immune to controversies that would have destroyed a politician in many parts of the world. He has survived up to 30 prosecutions for fraud and corruption and is currently on trial for having sex with an underage prostitute during lurid "bunga bunga" parties.

His wife Veronica left him in 2009, accusing him of consorting with underage women, and was recently awarded a settlement of 100,000 euros ($132,200) a day. But he even made campaign jokes about that.

Hostess' Wonder bread brand sold for $360 million

The long wait remains for Twinkies fans to find out who may rescue their beloved, cream-filled sponge cakes.

Flowers Foods Inc. will buy Hostess Brands Inc.'s Wonder bread business for $360 million after no other bidder emerged with a competing offer, a source told CNBC Wednesday.

Wonder bread was meant to be auctioned Wednesday by the bankrupt baker. Instead it will be going to Flowers, along with the Butternut, Home Pride, Merita and Nature's Pride brands, according to Reuters, which also cited an unnamed source familiar with the matter.

There will be an auction for the Beefsteak brand, for which Flowers bid $30 million, since Hostess received a higher bid from Mexico's Grupo Bimbo, said the source, who declined to be named as the process is private.

Bimbo bid $1 million more for the Beefsteak brand, though its $31.9 million bid includes a $900,000 breakup fee.

The deal with Flowers is still subject to approval by a bankruptcy court.

Flowers agreed in January to be the "stalking horse" bidder, which set a floor for the bidding and was subject to a court-supervised auction.

Hostess declined to comment. Flowers and Bimbo were not immediately available to comment.

Hostess expects to run two more auctions next month. One would be for the Hostess snack cake brands, including Hostess Twinkies and Dolly Madison, for which private equity firms Apollo Global Management LLC and C. Dean Metropoulos & Co. set the bidding at $410 million.

The other would be for its Drake's cake business and additional bread brands. So far, McKee Foods, maker of Little Debbie snack cakes, offered $27.5 million for Drake's, which includes Ring Dings, Yodels and Devil Dogs.

United States Bakery Inc, also known as Franz Family Bakery, agreed to pay $28.85 million for the Sweetheart, Eddy's, Standish Farms and Grandma Emilie's bread brands.

Reuters contributed to this report.

3rd GE Global Innovation Barometer survey underlines ... - AME Info

The UAE is one of only two countries in the region where the study was conducted, highlighting GE's commitment to the country, which has identified innovation, knowledge and sustainable development as key drivers of its growth.

The only Arab country classified as an innovation-driven economy by the World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Report 2012-13, the UAE is ranked 24th out of 144 globally in overall competitiveness.

In all 3,000 executives from 25 countries were surveyed with 73% of the respondents in the country stating that innovation, marked by improvement of products and services, had contributed to stronger business performance in the past.

Nabil Habayeb, GE's President & Chief Executive Officer for the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey, said: "In its third year now, the GE Global Innovation Barometer underlines the strategic importance that businesses in the UAE place on innovation. Quite significantly, UAE businesses demonstrate their openness to partnerships to drive innovation, with 88% of the respondents stating that their firms are increasingly looking at innovating through partnerships."

He added: "In other significant findings, UAE businesses feel that the government and public authorities are allocating an adequate share of budget to support innovative companies. A majority of the respondents, at 86%, state that SMEs and individuals can be as innovative as large corporations, highlighting the success of the UAE in promoting the SME sector, which contributes significantly to the non-oil GDP. The findings complement GE's growth approach to the UAE, where we are focused on building business partnerships, knowledge sharing and human capital development, which the country's business executives identify as key drivers to innovation."

Power of Collaboration

An overwhelming 91% of UAE respondents said they would be more successful at innovation through partnerships than by going about it alone - four points more than the global average of 87%.
? The UAE executives said partnerships are important to enter new markets (80%), access new technology (79%), speed up time to market (78%) and improve an existing product or service (75%)
? 72% said collaborations will help their businesses in benefiting from the partner company's sales force - 14 points higher than the global average
? Barriers to collaborative innovation, according to UAE respondents, are lack of protection of confidentiality/IP (58%) and lack of trust in partner companies (43%)

Innovation as Driver for Growth
81% of the UAE respondents said that understanding customers and anticipating market evolutions is the most important ability needed by businesses to innovate successfully
? 81% believe innovating on improving products and services will drive business performance
? Respondents said developing new technology (70%), creating an environment conducive to innovation (69%), and mining data inside and outside the company (62%) are key abilities businesses have to muster to innovate successfully
? 62% said localized innovation to meet domestic needs will play a key role in driving business performance

New Business Models and Talent Development
Reiterating the growing emphasis that UAE businesses place on innovation, the survey identified that 54% of the executives believe creating new business models is important to boost performance.
? 62% said attracting and retaining innovative people is another key driver for innovation
? While 58% of UAE business executives report that the country has a strong innovation-conducive environment, 54% expect decision-makers to encourage a stronger entrepreneurial culture in the education system through stronger linkages between students and business-savvy individuals
? 46% said creating financial environment that encourages the development of venture capital to support innovation is important

Although, UAE executives largely perceive innovation as a positive force and key economic driver, 45% of the respondents believe that with innovative practices creating more competition among businesses and making some products and services obsolete, it could have a negative impact on the economy in the long-run. This perception is shared by more business executives in the country than the global average of 30%.

This emerging "Innovation Vertigo" - an uneasiness with the changing dynamics of today's business landscape and uncertainty over the best path forward - is challenging leaders to think differently about how they will achieve growth. Many executives, however, seem to be embracing this complexity by exploring new and sometimes unexpected opportunities to innovate.

"Innovators must be resilient or risk being left behind," said Beth Comstock, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of GE.

"Change has become constant and we see leaders responding by betting big on more unconventional approaches to innovation to unlock growth. At GE, we are exploring different markets, partnerships structures and business models - all in the pursuit of uncovering new ways to better serve our customers and meet the world's biggest challenges head on."

The Barometer was commissioned by GE and conducted by independent research and consulting firm StrategyOne to explore how business leaders around the world view drivers and barriers to innovation and how those perceptions influence strategy.

Paper planes get producer tossed from Oscars

By The Hollywood Reporter

Apparently, rules are rules. After Disney's?"Paperman"?won the Academy Award for best animated short Sunday, producer?Kristina Reed?began throwing paper airplanes, about three or four -- with kisses on them, like the ones seen in the film -- from her seat in the mezzanine.

VIDEO: Disney's 'Paperman' Short Floats Online

The paper planes were nowhere near the stage, instead shooting straight down from the balcony. It went largely unnoticed by the crowd, but security didn't think the act was very sweet, kicking her out of the Dolby Theatre auditorium.

It would turn out to be temporary. After a short protest, security brought her back to her seat about five to 10 minutes later.?

The black-and-white "Paperman," which played on the big screen ahead of Oscar-nominated animated feature "Wreck-It Ralph"?(that film lost to?"Brave"), is a blend of hand-drawn and computer animation directed by?John Kahrs.

COMPLETE LIST: 2013 Oscar Winners

The film tells the story of a guy who notices a woman on the train platform and then in the office window across the street from his building. Stuck in a paper-pushing prison of an office, he does his best to catch her attention but is at the mercy of the wind's whim, as it takes his paper airplanes far from their intended destinations.

Tim Tebow Attacked By AFA For Canceling Gig At Mega Hate Church

Posted by: Bridgette P. LaVictoire on February 24, 2013.University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow sp...

Tim Tebow in his Sunday Best (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Tim Tebow is facing a great deal of blowback from evangelicals for his decision to not speak at First Baptist Church of Dallas. The Texas meagachurch is led by Pastor Robert Jeffress, an anti-gay, anti-Catholic, anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim Evangelical. Tebow claimed that he was cancelling his April appearance due to ?new information?; however, it is likely that he decided to cut out his visit to the church due to the probability of him losing his backup quarterback job with the New York Jets.

Claims were made by various Evangelicals that Tebow, who has proven to be a mediocre quarterback overall, had caved to the liberal media. Chief among those who slammed Tebow were the American Family Association?s Bryan Fischer who took to Facebook to allege that Tebow?s cancellation hurt his ?street cred with the Christian community.? Fischer wrote:

If Tebow does not in fact disagree with Jeffress on any of these points, then his decision looks like nothing more than craven capitulation to the nattering nabobs of negativism and intolerance ? Tebow has established his street cred with the evangelical community by being unapologetic and unwavering in his faith. If his NFL career washes out, this street cred with the Christian community is all he has left. He is squandering that enormous reservoir of goodwill and admiration as we speak, by taking a knee rather than stepping up in the pocket.

Apparently, tough, many Evangelicals even associated with the AFA disagree with the majority of the commentors on the One News Now site blasting the AFA for attacking Tebow. One News Now is the AFA?s news site, incidentally. In fact, the push back got so bad that, as The New Civil Rights Movement noted, the story got pulled down, rewritten and put back up trying to make it sound like the pushback against Tebow was coming from The People and not the AFA.

Jeffress, though, is maintaining that quarterback Tim Tebow has not canceled his appearance, but has just rescheduled.

It should be noted that the AFA maintains many of the same views as Jeffress with regards to Catholicism, Native Americans, Blacks, Gays, Muslims and Jews.

How to 'Hear' the Russian Meteor Explosion

A new recording lets human ears listen in on the largest infrasound blasts ever recorded, created by the meteor that exploded over Russia last week.

Infrasonic waves from the Russian meteor fireball were picked up by 17 infrasound stations around the world, part of a network for detecting nuclear weapon explosions. Stations as far away as Antarctica tracked the blast's low-frequency waves as they traveled through Earth's atmosphere.

The signal was filtered and sped up 135 times to make it audible to human ears, according to the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), which runs the stations. [Listen to the recording]

The meteor blast was not a fixed explosion, Pierrick Mialle, an acoustic scientist for the CTBTO, said in a statement. Instead, the meteor was traveling faster than the speed of sound, burning up as it went. "That's how we distinguish it from mining blasts or volcanic eruptions," he said.

Mialle said that scientists around the world will use the infrasound data to learn more about the meteor's final altitude, how much energy it released and how it disintegrated.

Based on scrutiny of infrasound records, NASA scientists initially concluded the fireball released about 300 kilotons of energy, Bill Cooke, head of the Meteoroid Environments Office at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., said Feb. 17.

White House calls draft immigration plan a backup

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republicans and Democrats alike on Sunday predicted President Barack Obama would fail if he pushed forward with his own effort to overhaul the nation's immigration system and urged the administration to hold off while lawmakers work on a bipartisan measure.

Republican Sen. John McCain predicted the administration's efforts would come up short if the White House went forward with a proposal to put the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. on a long pathway to citizenship. Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer, who met with Obama on Wednesday at the White House to discuss progress, urged his allies in the administration to give a bipartisan group of eight lawmakers the time to hammer out a deal on their own.

Obama's newly appointed top aide, chief of staff Denis McDonough, said the White House would only send its plan to Congress if the lawmakers stumble in their efforts and cast its efforts as a back-up plan.

"Well, let's make sure that it doesn't have to be proposed," McDonough said of the president's pitch, first reported on USA Today's website late Saturday.

"We will be prepared with our own plan if these ongoing talks between Republicans and Democrats up on Capitol Hill break down," McDonough said in a second interview, adding he's optimistic they would not crumble.

The administration's proposal would create a visa for those in the country illegally and allow them to become legal permanent residents within eight years. The proposal also requires businesses to know the immigration status of their workers and adds more funding for border security.

It drew immediate criticism from Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.

"If actually proposed, the president's bill would be dead on arrival in Congress, leaving us with unsecured borders and a broken legal immigration system for years to come," said Rubio, who is among the eight lawmakers searching for a comprehensive plan.

Many of the details in the administration's draft proposal follow the broad principles that Obama previously outlined. But the fact the administration is writing its own alternative signaled Obama wants to address immigration sooner rather than later and perhaps was looking to nudge lawmakers to move more quickly.

The tactic potentially complicates the administration's work with Congress.

Republican Rep. Paul Ryan, the Wisconsin lawmaker who was his party's vice presidential nominee last year, said the timing of the leak suggested the White House was looking for "a partisan advantage and not a bipartisan solution."

"Leaking this out does set things in the wrong direction," said Ryan, who could be a serious contender for his party's presidential nomination in 2016. "There are groups in the House and the Senate working together to get this done and when he does things like this, it makes that much more difficult to do that."

Freshman Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, called the leaked plan "incomplete" and said both parties in Congress and the White House need to work together on a solution.

"It hasn't happened yet. It will happen before something is acted upon and certainly before something is passed," he said.

McCain, the Arizona senator whose previous efforts at an immigration overhaul ended in failure in 2007, predicted the White House proposal's demise if it were sent to Congress. He strongly urged the president to pocket the drafted measures and give senators a chance to finish their work.

"I believe we are making progress in a bipartisan basis," McCain, who is among the Senate group working on legislation, said.

Schumer, a New York Democrat and a close ally to the White House, said he has not seen the draft proposals but, along with the Democrats working on a compromise, met with Obama this week to talk about progress being made on Capitol Hill. Schumer acknowledged that a single-party proposal would have a much more difficult time becoming law and urged the bipartisan group of senators to keep meeting to find common ground.

"I am very hopeful that in March we will have a bipartisan bill," Schumer said. "And, you know, it's obvious if a Democrat ? the president or anyone else ? puts out what they want on their own, (it) is going to be different than when you have a bipartisan agreement. But the only way we're going to get something done is with a bipartisan agreement."

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., suggested Obama's proposed plan was going nowhere amid Republican soul searching on the party's courtship of Hispanic voters, who supported Obama in November with 71 percent of their votes.

"I think people want a little different phase on immigration frankly," said Paul, who is also considered among the 2016 presidential hopefuls. "They want someone, somebody who wants to round people up, put (them) in camps and send them back to Mexico."

McDonough appeared on ABC's "This Week," NBC's "Meet the Press" and CBS' "Face the Nation." Ryan and Castro spoke to "This Week." McCain spoke to "Meet the Press." Schumer appeared on CNN's "State of the Union." Paul appeared on "Fox News Sunday."

NCAA Basketball Picks: Georgia vs. Ole Miss

Conference races on the hardwood are heating up, and we have a preview and a NCAAB pick for Saturday's crucial SEC clash between the Ole Miss Rebels and Georgia Bulldogs.

There's no argument who the best team in the SEC is as the Florida Gators enter the weekend 20-3 overall and two games up in the conference standings.? Billy Donovan's bunch appears headed for a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and with a strong close plus a stumble or two by teams above them, the Gators could even wind up with one of the four No. 1 invitations.

Image previewWho goes to the conference tournament as the 2-seed is open for debate, however, especially now that Kentucky lost talented freshman Nerlens Noel to a season-ending knee injury.? Alabama has the inside edge, assuming Kentucky does drop a rung or two as expected in the conference standings, but several more squads lurk in the shadows for the second slot in the SEC tourney set to begin March 14 in Nashville.

Two of the hopefuls collide Saturday night at Tad Smith Coliseum where the Mississippi Rebels (18-6 overall, 7-4 SEC) host the Georgia Bulldogs (12-12, 6-5).? ESPN2 will have the broadcast from Oxford starting at 8 PM (ET), and Bookmaker sent overnight NCAAB odds out with an 11-point spread favoring the Rebels and 130 for the total.

Ole Miss In Rut Following Fast Start

The Rebels gave every indication early on that they would be the SEC's second-best team and maybe even give the Gators at least a strong run for their money.? Andy Kennedy's crew jumped out to a 17-2 start with both losses in close games away from home to solid mid-majors (Middle Tennessee and IndianaState).

Ole Miss bolted to a 6-0 record in SEC play once the conference schedule arrived, a launch that included smacking then-No. 10 Missouri, a pair of wins over Tennessee and taking out Vanderbilt on the road in overtime.

In the little more than two weeks that have passed since sitting 6-0 in the SEC, the Rebels have dropped four of five games to fall out of the rankings and back in the conference pack.? They were completely outplayed at Mizzou last Saturday in a return match, then fell at Texas A&M on Wednesday.? Favored by one, Mississippi let a first-half lead slip away as the Aggies rallied for a 69-67 victory.

The losses to their newest conference rivals hurt, but the good news is the Rebels are back home where they sport a 12-1 record straight up, 6-2 against the spread.

A big problem the last couple of weeks has been on the defensive end of the floor where Ole Miss is allowing nearly 72 PPG in conference play.? The Rebels have given up more than 81 per game in losing four of the last five, and let Missouri and Texas A&M have far too many open looks from beyond the arc where the Tigers and Aggies combined for 20-of-39 shooting.

Bulldogs Aim For Fourth-Straight Road Dubya

It will be big news if Mississippi's scoring defense doesn't improve vs. Georgia.? The Bulldogs are in the bottom 20 nationally averaging just 59.0 PPG, a figure that dips to 57.2 in SEC play.

Georgia is coming off a defeat at home on Tuesday, a 52-45 setback to 'Bama who was favored by a bucket on the road.? It was the third time in conference action the Bulldogs were held under 50, the other two coming in losses to Florida, and it's simply a case of Mark Cox not having a scoring threat outside sophomore Kentavious Caldwell-Pope whose 17.7 PPG is close to a third of the team's normal output.? He had nearly half of Georgia's 45 vs. Alabama.

The Bulldogs do play decent defense; if not, they would be getting blown out nightly and sitting somewhere around 5-19 overall on the season.? Georgia also owns the all-time series lead vs. Mississippi, 66-40, and upset the Rebels on this floor a little more than two years ago, the second win as underdogs in their last three trips to Oxford.

Four of the last five in this series have gone OVER the scoreboard figure, but it's hard to dream up where more than 130 points are going to come from.? My basketball picks will be on the UNDER.

ActionStep Ted Jordan: Building A Business To Be... | Stuff.co.nz

ACTION MAN: New Zealand gave Ted Jordan, seen here in his Auckland office, a fresh start and a clean slate.

Fairfax NZ

ACTION MAN: New Zealand gave Ted Jordan, seen here in his Auckland office, a fresh start and a clean slate.

A quick Google of Ted Jordan's company ActionStep reveals a flurry of commercial activity over the past year. But it's 2013 that will see ActionStep, a cloud-based management system for professional practices like lawyers, really hit its straps, Jordan says. With distribution deals signed in the United States, Britain, and Australia now secured, staff on the ground in America and all the groundwork done, this is the year that ActionStep will go from a local producer to a highly scaleable international business, he says.

Why did you become an entrepreneur?

When I had previously worked for a number of big corporates in the United States, I noticed that although there were commonalities in the systems, they were designing systems for different organisations, they would reinvent the wheel every time they started developing a new system.

I had a vision of creating a better system, one that could meet the needs of small-to-medium-sized businesses in the same way that the larger organisations' needs were being met, but at a price that SMEs could afford. That's when the vision for ActionStep was born. The decision to start my own business and develop ActionStep coincided with the decision by my wife and me to move to New Zealand to raise our children. So this gave me a fresh start and a clean slate, which is perfect for an entrepreneur.

Name one thing you've learnt while in business and from whom?

One thing I've learned is that businesses are successful not because of a unique idea but because of the way they meet the needs of the market and deliver extraordinary value and service for their customers.

I learned this not only from my experience in corporations, which often lose their focus on what they're supposed to be doing, but also from a great business book with an interesting title: A Good Hard Kick in the Ass: Basic Training for Entrepreneurs. I found that the author, Rob Adams, gets straight to the heart of the real issues facing start-ups because he is a specialist in financing and supporting new businesses.

What are your business and personal goals?

My business goal is to grow ActionStep to be an internationally recognised player in the online business space and a leader in niches such as law practice management, where we offer unique advantages over any other technology available and are making a name for ourselves at the moment in the United States as well as New Zealand.

On a personal level, money is not a motivator for me, I am more interested in building technology and a business that I can be proud of and that will deliver value to our clients. At the same time, I am conscious of the need to maintain my core values in regard to my family and friends.

Do you have any tips for budding entrepreneurs?

Don't dabble in a whole bunch of things, focus on one thing, the one thing you do best, and do it better than anybody else.

Are you prepared for failure?

Totally. I've always believed you learn more from your failures than your successes and for that reason, take the time to carefully analyse mistakes. Any one business strategy may fail, so you need to be prepared to adapt and move on if you need to. Don't get too caught up in one thing if it's not working, and don't take it too much to heart if a strategy doesn't work. Just move on.

What has been your biggest disappointment since you started your business?

No specific disappointment, but generally having a feeling that we could have gone harder and faster earlier. We were so far ahead of the technology curve that they did not even invent the terminology for what we were doing until years later. But we got there in the end so that's really what counts.

What is one thing readers would be surprised to learn about you?

That I am still a kid at heart and I still enjoy watching cartoons and being generally silly whenever I get the chance. My children still ask me what I plan to be when I grow up.

Harrison Ford to play Han Solo again; Vin Diesel sings Rihanna; SI models do the 'Harlem Shake': PM Buzz

Latino Review, a site that's posted major movie scoops before, reports Harrison Ford will return as Han Solo in "Star Wars: Episode VII." The now 70-year-old actor previously said he's open to playing the intergalactic smuggler character again, but there's no word on how he could play Solo again if the new trilogy picks up recently after "Return of the Jedi." A source says Ford, director J.J. Abrams, screenwriter Michael Ardnt and LucasFilm's Kathleen Kennedy have already reached an agreement for a "signifcant" deal, but Disney has yet to officially comment.
? Read more at Slash Film.

"Fast and Furious 6" star Vin Diesel sang karaoke on Valentine's Day, performing his own rendition of Rihanna's new ballad "Stay." The 45-year-old actor posted the video on his Facebook and wrote "Happy V Day..." Diesel hits the high notes pretty well, but the sad song looks even sadder in a dark room by himself:

Having already mastered "Teach Me How to Dougie" and the "Cat Daddy," cover girl Kate Upton naturally joined in on the Sports Illustrated swimsuit models' "Harlem Shake" dance this week. The SI video shows the bikini babes trading bathing suits for college basketball jerseys -- sorry, none are wearing Syracuse Orange gear -- and breaking it down to the latest viral video craze in front of the famous "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign. Joining Upton are Chrissy Teigen, Nina Agdal, Katherine Webb and more stars of the new magazine currently on stands.

"Stand By Me" star River Phoenix appears in one last film, finished 20 years after his death. Director George Sluizer compiled footage from "Dark Blood," filling it in with voiceovers and other movie magic to create a movie starring the late actor, who was 23 at the time. Phoenix plays Boy, a young Native American widower that rescues a wealthy couple whose car breaks down in the middle of the desert. He died 10 days before shooting wrapped of a massive drug overdose outside an L.A. nightclub that was owned by Johnny Depp at the time. Sluizer is still in negotiations for distribution rights, but a new trailer is out:

Belkin's $299 Thunderbolt Express dock now up for pre-order, shipping next week

Image

Unless there's any more last-minute tweaks, those fussy perfectionists at Belkin are ready to lift the cloche on the Thunderbolt Express dock. We'd originally seen the unit at last year's CES, but the company postponed the launch after adding a trio of USB 3.0 ports and eSATA to the hardware. If you didn't give up and shell out for the Matrox DS1 in the meantime, you can pre-order the Thunderbolt Express today for shipping next week.

Update: eSATA, which was added to the roster last summer, was ultimately dropped from the final production version.

Hundreds hurt as meteorite hits Russia

CHELYABINSK, Russia (Reuters) - More than 500 people were injured when a meteorite shot across the sky and exploded over central Russia on Friday, sending fireballs crashing to Earth, shattering windows and damaging buildings.

People heading to work in Chelyabinsk heard what sounded like an explosion, saw a bright light and then felt a shockwave according to a Reuters correspondent in the industrial city 1,500 km (950 miles) east of Moscow.

A fireball blazed across the horizon, leaving a long white trail in its wake which could be seen as far as 200 km (125 miles) away in Yekaterinburg. Car alarms went off, windows shattered and mobile phone networks were interrupted.

"I was driving to work, it was quite dark, but it suddenly became as bright as if it was day," said Viktor Prokofiev, 36, a resident of Yekaterinburg in the Urals Mountains.

"I felt like I was blinded by headlights," he said.

No fatalities were reported but President Vladimir Putin, who was due to host Finance Ministry officials from the Group of 20 nations in Moscow, and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev were informed.

A local ministry official said such incidents were extremely rare and Friday's events might have been linked to an asteroid the size of an Olympic swimming pool due to pass Earth at a distance of 27,520 km (17,100 miles) but this was not confirmed.

Russia's space agency Roscosmos said the meteorite was travelling at a speed of 30 km (19 miles) per second and that such events were hard to predict. The Interior Ministry said the meteorite explosion had caused a sonic boom.

Russia's Emergencies Ministry said 514 people had sought medical help, mainly for light injuries caused by flying glass, and that 112 of those were kept in hospital. Search groups were set up to look for the remains of the meteorite.

"There have never been any cases of meteorites breaking up at such a low level over Russia before," said Yuri Burenko, head of the Chelyabinsk branch of the Emergencies Ministry.

WINDOWS BREAK, FRAMES BUCKLE

Windows were shattered on Chelyabinsk's central Lenin Street and some of the frames of shop fronts buckled.

A loud noise, resembling an explosion, rang out at around 9.20 a.m. (12:20 a.m. ET). The shockwave could be felt in apartment buildings in the industrial city's center.

"I was standing at a bus stop, seeing off my girlfriend," said Andrei, a local resident who did not give his second name. "Then there was a flash and I saw a trail of smoke across the sky and felt a shockwave that smashed windows."

A wall was damaged at the Chelyabinsk Zinc Plant but a spokeswoman said there was no environmental threat.

Although such events are rare, a meteorite is thought to have devastated an area of more than 2,000 sq km (1,250 miles) in Siberia in 1908, smashing windows as far as 200 km (125 miles) from the point of impact.

The Emergencies Ministry described Friday's events as a "meteor shower in the form of fireballs" and said background radiation levels were normal. It urged residents not to panic.

Chelyabinsk city authorities urged people to stay indoors unless they needed to pick up their children from schools and kindergartens. They said what sounded like a blast had been heard at an altitude of 10,000 meters (32,800 feet).

The U.S. space agency NASA has said an asteroid known as 2012 DA14, about 46 meters in diameter, would have an encounter with Earth closer than any asteroid since scientists began routinely monitoring them about 15 years ago.

Television, weather and communications satellites fly about 500 miles higher. The moon is 14 times farther away.

Finance | 401k Enrollment Time? Here's Some Tips | #SoPhi ...

401k
In study after study, 401(k) investors come up short of the amount they need to sustain a pre-retirement lifestyle during their golden years. The reason for the failure? Lack of planning. To avoid finding yourself in short of cash just as your leisure years begin, consider these six tips.

1. Have a Number in Mind
Conventional wisdom tells us that saving for the future is the key to a happy retirement. In keeping with this mandate, investors put money into tax-deferred retirement savings plans. If they manage to save the maximum permitted by the plan, they often turn to tax-aware investments in order to keep their nest eggs growing and their tax liabilities low. On the surface it sounds great, but is it enough?

Blindly pumping money into your investments and hoping for the best is not an intelligent way to plan. Instead of just looking at the amount risk they are willing to take or the amount they can afford to put away each month and using that as a guide for their savings, smart investors set goals. They figure out how much money they will need to save in order to fund their desired retirement lifestyle, and then they save and invest accordingly. (To help with retirement planning, check out 5 Retirement Plan Moves TO Make Before Year-End.)

2. Monitor Your Results
Having a specific hard-dollar goal enables investors to track their progress toward that goal and allows investors to make adjustments to their portfolios in accordance with that progress. Consider, for example, that for many years, mutual fund companies suggested that their 401(k) plans would deliver average returns of 8% per year.

This hypothetical rate of return suggested that, on average, investors would just about double their money every eight years. Unfortunately, average returns don?t always work out so well in real life. Consider, for example, the 10-year period from 2000-2010. Instead of doubling every eight years, 10 years of investing in a well-diversified stock fund like Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund delivered a paltry 2.45% average annual return. A $10,000 investment on January 1, 2000 was a measly $12,744 on December 31 2010, a decade later.

The lesson for investors is clear: watch your balance. If it isn?t where it needs to be, take action. Get more aggressive, save more, change investments, etc. Evolve your strategy to keep up with the ever-changing financial markets. (For another reason to review your retirement plan, read New Retirement Plan Limits For 2010.)

3. You Can Never Save Too Much
For years, mutual fund companies told 401(k) plan participants that investing less than 10% of their income per year was enough. ?Invest enough to get the company match? was another piece of advice. Some ?experts? even suggested that investors were saving too much. Those sentiments have fallen by the wayside. Today, some experts recommend that investors save 12-15% of their pre-tax income as a starting point. Increasing that rate each year is strongly recommended.

Common sense plays a role here too. We all know that a significant number of people reach retirement without having enough money. Yet, we never hear stories about retirees who find themselves awash in cash and wishing they had less of it. The bottom line here? Save more. In the worst-case scenario, you?ll have saved so much more than you need that you will be able to retire early. (For more information, read Top 4 Reasons To Save For Retirement Now.)

4. Investment Diversification
Generations of 401(k) investors were told that diversification among stocks/bonds/cash was the way to protect their portfolios. As we have learned, there are periods of time where this idea simply doesn?t work.

The next generation of investors would do well to diversify beyond the traditional offerings by allocating a portion of their assets to annuities, income generating real estate or other investments that are not correlated to stock market performance. (For more ideas on diversification, see Bear-Proof Your Retirement Portfolio.)

5. Don?t be Greedy
More than a few retirees have a significant portion of their wealth invested in their former employer?s stock on the day they retire. If they fail to diversify, they risk losing everything if/when the stock crashes. Similarly, investors often hold onto their investments even after the investments have risen significantly in value.

In both cases, there is value in learning your limits. If you have a princely sum in company stock, diversification is a great way to lock in your gains. If your other investments have done their job and you have enough of a nest egg to achieve your goals, move you money to more conservative investments. Remember that old saying about the value of a bird in the hand versus two in the bush! (For information on what to do when you have reached your goals, see 3 Ways To Make Your Retirement Funds Last.)

6. Have a Plan B
What if you do everything right but your investments still don?t work out? Move to Plan B. You can choose to work longer, you can choose to change your lifestyle, or you can choose to do both.

Changing your lifestyle may require that you cut back on things you like to do. It may require moving to a less expensive home. It may even require relocating to a less expensive city, taking a roommate or moving in with a relative.

Just as you should be monitoring your investments during your working years, you should also be considering your alternatives. By taking some time to consider your alternatives before you need to make a choice, you will have a plan and be ready to act on it if and when the time to choose arrives. (If you choose to work longer, see Working Longer: Will It Hurt Your Retirement.)

Investing in the Real World
The financial markets are an imperfect tool. Relying on them subjects your future to the volatile and unpredictable nature of the investment returns financial markets generate. Despite these shortcomings, the financial markets are the primary retirement savings generator for millions of investors. Accept what you cannot change, and take an active role in monitoring your investments and making the changes you can in pursuit of your goals. (To read more on how retirement investing has changed, see The Evolution Of Retirement.)
